Anybody have tips for installing Keyless Entry into an E36??

I can't find much info on installing a keyless setup into an E36 other than the expensive plug-n-play setups. I bought this, and want to install it this weekend. From what I understand, it SHOULD be a simple install, just need to provide a lock & unlock signal to the body module as if it were being locked with a key from the outside, and the car will handle the rest, right?? I have a BMW ETM for the car, but it doesn't make much sense to me as far as wanting to try to integrate something aftermarket into it. Help???

Well, I found THIS, so now I know what the lock/unlock wires are on the car, now I just need to figure out what wires from the Avitals harness hooks to them for lock/unlock signal. Help??

For anybody that reads this thread later on - a keyless-only setup can be installed rather quickly and easily, and ALL connections can be made at the 12-pin plug behind the glovebox for the factory alarm. Here's a chart I made of that connector, and the connections I used in my Avital 2101L install.

OK, I need to pin out this connector in chart form, or it will just keep confusing me.

Car side 12-pin plug (Connector X13026)
    Pin# Color Function
    1 Red/White +12V
    2 Violet/White +12V Ignition
    3 Brown/Orange Ground
4 Brown/Grey Drivers Door Jam Switch Input
5 Brown/Blue Passengers Door Jam Switch Input
    6 Not Used
    7 Black/Blue Horn Output
8 Blue/Green To Crash Control Module
    9 White/Red +Door Lock
    10 Blue/Red +Door Unlock
    11 Brown/White
    12 Brown/Red

OK, now from what I understand of the Avital wiring so far:

    H1/1 - Red - +12V - Splice To Pin 1 X13026
    H1/2 - Not used
    H1/3 - Not used
    H1/4 - Not used
    H1/5 - Green/Black - Lock #30 Common Output Splice To Pin 9 X13026
    H1/6 - Not Used
    H1/7 - Violet/Black - Lock #87 Normally Open (Input) - Splice With H1/1 Red
    H1/8 - Blue/Black - Unlock #30 Common Output - Splice To Pin 10 X13026
    H1/9 - Violet - Unlock #87 Normally Open - Splice With H1/1 Red
    H1/10 - Not Used
    H1/11 - Black - Chassis Ground (Can Splice to Pin 3 X13026)
    H1/12 - Not Used
    H1/13 - Not Used
    H1/14 - Not Used
    H1/15 - Yellow - +12V Ignition - Splice To Pin 2 X13026
    H1/16 - Not Used
    H1/17 - Not Used
    H1/18 - Not Used

Why does it keep merging, i've posted in this thread 3-4 times now!

I think there should be a plug for the original keyless entry/alarm that you could use.

Yup. I chopped the plug off the original Alpine's alarm harness so I didn't have to hack up the cars wiring. Works perfect!

Just fyi.... If your car has double lock feature you need to get two 1amp Diodes and install them on Pin 9 and pin 10 in order for it to function with your key-less remotes
I did a remote start/keyless install on mine..wasn't too hard.

NOTE this is from a Viper system..but the wiring should be the same or very similar that of yours since Avital, Viper, Python, and Clifford Alarms are all made by the Same company.

    1 - -------------|H1/Red/Constant 12v
2 - -------------|H3/Pink/Ignition (This is where the female nylon disconnect comes in handy)
    3 - -------------|H1/Black/Ground
    4 - -------------|H1/Green/Door Trigger Input
    5 - -------------|H1/Green/Door Trigger Input
    6 - -------------|Only used on 4 Doors
7 - -------------|H1/Brown/Siren NOTE: I Left this pin blank as i used that Brown Cable to go to the External Siren that came with my car
    8 - -------------|H1/White/Parking Light Output
    9 - -------------|Lock-Unlock/Blue/ Lock Output
    10 - ------------|Lock-Unlock/Green/ Unlock Output
    11 - ------------|H1/Blue/Instant Trunk Trigger
12 - ------------|H1/Black-White/Domelights NOTE: Don't Use e36's already have Auto Domelights when car is unlocked.

Hey guys, sorry to resurrect an old thread...

I bought this keyless system just because I wanted an easy way to lock and unlock the doors (PO broke BOTH exterior door handles, among other things.) I've got it wired up correctly for lock and unlock using central locking with the diodes and all that. The module I bought has two identical output wires for the parking light flash. Since the module does not have a seperate horn output, I want to use one of these wires for a quick horn chirp for confirmation of a lock sequence. I used the pre-installed alarm wiring behind the glove box (Canadian car) and tried to tap into the horn output wire in that harness. It does not work.

Will I need a relay in order to make this work? Has anyone done this with a cheap aftermarket system? Anybody have diagrams?

I also think I may have to do this even though I had figured the relay switching would have been integrated into the module I bought. Oh well, you get what you pay for I suppose.

Thanks in advance and sorry again for digging up the dead thread!

I'm glad you did revive the thread because although I can't help you, I bought the same entry system and cannot get it to work, no matter what I try. I don't have that black connector everyone is talking about in this thread so I'm kinda stuck.

    Hi,

I suggest to you both to find a local reputable car audio/alarm installer and have them fit a high quality, well supported system so that you can have what you want to achieve. The reason unbranded/generic items are cheap is partly due to zero support and after sales care and potentially 'different' internals/electronics meaning you need to know what's what with the system in order to fit it properly - as they're generic, no wonder there's no instructions or information supplied with them! at least it's just $16 wasted!

    Cheers, Dennis!
