e39 Angel Eyes / Daytime Running Lights

I have a '99 528i with xenon that I upgraded to '01-'03 Hella Angel eye xenon lights. My question is am I able to just have the AE's on and daytime running lights off when I have my switch in the parking light position? Currently, both are on, AE's and DRL, when the switch is in the parking light position.

Posted this in the Lighting forum, but no responses.

Can't seem to find the exact info. Any help?

    Thx.

You need to turn off your DRL with a scan tool that can do this. Be aware that once the DRL are off, they will not be on when your parking lights are turned off.

Thanks for the reply. I could take out the bulbs for this result as well, correct? If I do this, will I get errors on the dash?

    Any other methods?

I'm pretty sure your DRL's are just your high beam bulbs on low brightness... thats what mine are! So no, you can't leave those unplugged or they'll throw a code, especially if your LCM is coded to run DRL's.

    ^This is an e39 99' doesn't come with DRLs!

Do what I did which requires custom wiring. Locate ur fuse box under your hood passanger side. (It is under your air filter box and u have to remove the air filter box to open it with hex wrench) Then locate a large red wire and tap into that. Use that wire to power you angels. This supply comes on when the car key is in the on position automatically and turns off when your car does. U can then have the parking light on when the car is off and they will not come on.

ha my cousins 99 528i had DRL. It ruins the look of the AE's.
he ended up just disconnecting the bulbs.

if you have the low instrument cluster is not as anoying to see bulb error like the high cluster.

Done. Took 30 minutes. It's nice to have the ae's come on automatically.

    sorry old thread revival -

I know djkapeesh did a great job showing how to wire angel eyes to come on independent of the headlights, but (and maybe I'm not seeing this) my DRL's come on when I turn on my car. They'll only turn off if I turn on my headlights, but I really only want to use my angel eyes as DRL's.

For now, I've just disconnected my high beam/drl bulbs, but the error message on the display is getting old. Other than going with Carsoft or GT1 is there really no other way to disable DRL's altogether?

just reprogram the DRL's off. i am sure you can find somebody in your area that has the software and hardware to do the reprogramming. or you could do it yourself for little money, and have the ability to do other coding if you like. changing the door lock sequence, changing the oil change interval. lots of stuff.
