The fuel use when the tune is starting to get close is not too bad - unless u drive it hard then those 60 lb/hr injectors can empty the fuel tank pretty quick.

On a trip with some spirited driving got about 500km from 62ltr about 12.4 l/100km
ive been using it for work in peak hour traffic with stop/start and some acceleration bursts got 420km from 66 ltr so 15.7 l/100km.

Its not 100% tuned yet. Part-mid throttle acceleration still a little rich 10-11:1, Idle and low throttle good at 14:1 and full throttle at the rpm cut is 11.8:1 so it’s close. Tuner gets his licence back on 30/6 so hope can be fully tuned shortly.

That’s pretty impressive. I thought the supercharger were worse on fuel and that’s why I was considering turbo for the v12.

Chassis dyno booked for 12th July. Road tuning nearly finished today. I’ve got it on a dyno dynamics one. We will see how it goes I guess. Should make more than the oringainal ess kit 320rwhp.

yes it’s not easy. Ultimately the turbo will make more power over a supercharger but it just kills the exhaust note which id imagine on a supercharged v12 would be just fantastic.

The economy is down to tuning. All being equal technically a turbo will be more economical as U don’t have the parasitic loss to deal with. Like any forced induction setup the tuning is critical to how it performs. I’m not fully ruling out going to a standalone computer. So far the combination of Porsche 809 maf, resistors, fuel interceptor computer, adjustable fpr, and ess chip is coping well. Occasionally on as Cold morning the mixtures are a little lean on the first few excursions to part throttle but if I change that load point it will stuff up ther curve so I’m living with it for now. Very occasionally it goes to limp mode (I think maxing the maf) but it’s only happened twice on crisp cold mornings. It’s easliy reset by the Peake tool or just turning power off seems to reset it.

Goes on chassis dyno so last night put some fresh liqui moly oil in it as oil has probably had plenty of fuel mixed into it with the rich running in the past. Hope chassis dyno goes well and it make makes some nice power.

Results from dyno were pretty disappointing
made 256rwkw (343rwhp). Air fuels were good, car pulls hard, but after speaking to dyno man only ran to 6200 (instead of 7000 missing out on about 3psi and also dynoed in 3rd instead of 1:1 5th so wheelsping come lsd have been an issue with my well worn Michelin’s. I’ll book it in with my regular dyno chap as I just used one out of google. At the end of the day had air/fuels varified so it wasn’t a total waste. Hehe maybe I’ve only picked up 20rwhp from a further 7psi, and properly tuned fuel mixtures. I should have stayed there with it .

Haha sounds like excuses 101 doesn’t it. Low dyno readings are like a big downer.

I’ve been following your updates, keep them coming.

Are you really running 14psi? That’s a shitload of boost and keep in mind you aren’t playing with any timing, only afr’s. What type of dyno was it?

For comparison, my M60B44 with 272/254 cams, running 5 psi with a powerdyne and Link ecu made 365-375rwhp on a dynojet. Aim is over 400whp with ~7-8psi (new pulley, unsure what it will boost exactly) and water/methanol injection, tune booked for 30/07/18.

Dynos can be heartbreakers. Remember they’re tuning tools, not ego inflators 😀. I bet she still pulls harder than a school boy and now you know it’s safe.

It’s running off the ess chip for timing. We can passively change timing at part throttle also by adding more fuel pressure and removing more fuel from the ecu which adds more timing. No pinging. The m60b40 is underestimated on how strong it is. I could easily go more boost on pump fuel. With e85 I reckon it could take over 20psi. I’m running the vortech to about 45000rpm now.

The only problem upping power now is the maf setup may not like adding more resistors. I’m at 0.15v at idle to see less than 5v at the end. If the dme sees more than 5v goes into limp mode.

Ahh yes the dyno operator should have been red flagged to me when he stated it’s been a while since I used this. Nevermind. I’ll book in with my regular one but I’ll prob have to wait. It’s the strangest dyno plot I’ve seen. Torque basically is a straight line going up peaking apparently at 7000rpm, and intake air was at 7degC with ambient air at 25degC and gear was labeled as 5th with road speed indicated like it’s in 3rd. Yes if feels strong I can barely get traction in the dry in 3rd. My Michelin Pilot supersports are pretty 2nd hand and rear camber looks about -3 by eye. I’m going to the alignment shop this morning and I have a spare set of ps4 tyres so I’ll whack them on and back off the camber so I can at least use 2nd without wheelspinning every time I hit 4000 rpm.

Yeah dyno feels about 100rwhp light. Hehe we will see.

I fitted up an mTech3 airbag steering wheel. It’s wrapped in suede. It’s not the nicest looking wheel going around but it feels much better than the original 3 spoke offering as it’s slighly smaller and has those bulges in the right spots. I’ll post a pic up today.

For 14psi I would expect significantly more than the number posted! Good to see more blown E34's down under.

Considering the amount of messing around with the MAF etc, why not go standalone?

Hehe I’m not really worried at all. It’s still goes hard as it did before the low dyno run lol. I’ll rebook with my regular dyno chap for about 3 weeks time.

Yes a standalone may be on the cards. I have a spare haltech elite that was planning to go in the 635 but I may need it. I swapped out my well worn rear tyres for some ps4 245/45/18 that are only a few months old. Yes they are taller which makes the heating effectively taller and they look abit old school drag racer especially that I had to lose the 20mm spacers. They are very effective for grip tho. Could easily use full throttle in 2nd with only an occasional hint of wheelspin. When I get my bbs rs barrel inners from getting the first set remade for the rear (expensive mistake) I’ve got a set of Bridgestone re-71r tyres ordered. They are already on the front wheels but not on car yet as that would look a little odd. These are supposed to be the best road going tyres that can go do track days. We will see how they go.

Now I have some grip I think the e34 chassis can cope with more power. It may be time to activate the order for the larger crank pulley and max out the vortech. I’m happy to run e85 only if need be. Going from 140mm dia to 152mm. We will see how much grip I have and how it dynoed up in 2-3 weeks.

Got another exciting addition. A m5 gauge cluster in metric with 300kmh speedo, 8000rpm tach and oil temp. More cosmetic than performance enhancing but there is something cool about a 300kmh speedo and the technical reason is of course the 7000rpm redline which is where my cutout is

It’s nearly time for the standalone. I have a haltech sitting at home waiting to go into my e24 but I may need it for the e34. I can’t quite get it as stable as I would like as it needs constant re-steering the ecu to make it happy. I think the combination of big injectors, fuel interceptor, adjustable fpr, and potentiometer to keep the maf in range is prob gone beyond what it’s capable of. That way I can run flex fuel and a larger crank pulley again. I’ll have 1 more go of tuning it, but what I’m doing is starting to effect cold starts etc. I’ve bought a Walbro 525 fuel pump so perhaps some Siemens deka 100lb/hr injectors so I can run modest fuel pressure so I don’t have capacity drop in the pump as the 60’s I have now will need 70+ psi to handle e85.

We will see how it pans out. I think this will be the smart thing to do. Bit of a pain to wire it in but it will be the way to go forward with this.

Hopefully my take2 bbs inner barrels will be ready this week.

Standalone is the way to go in my opinion. It seems like all these additional modifications are band-aids to the problem and it will give you a load more tuning options, as you've pointed out! I usually post my updates on the facebook page rather than here. Do many people still read this?

Well at the 11th hr before putting a standalone in the combo of Porsche 809 maf, ess chipped 404 ecu runs really nice on the 60lb/hr injectors with the assistance of an adjustable FPR, and potentiometer to keep the maf away from the 5v. Replacing the crank angle sensor with a genuine one seemed to be the major issue as soon as replaced the idle voltage went from 0.15v to a more stable 0.5v. It had to be tuned again and had really lean cold starts which was fixed with using a 1 way valve on the FPR so it wouldn’t effect fuel pressure under vaccum conditions. Only slight side effect is a tiny bit rich on a warm start.

i picked up another e34 540i/6 with panel vandalism and missing engine/gearbox. Had a few nice parts.
    • koni yellows with h&r springs
    • m5 front calipers/disks
    • 3.15 lsd large case
    • front and rear adjustable sway bars
    • full black interior
    • shadowline trim
    • manual tail shaft
    • manual pedal box and associated hydraulics
    • acs 17x8.5 1 piece rims
    • m5 console storage panel
    • powerflex Bushes in all front and rear

Mechanically Its about the abalute minumum boost level (13psi) this setup can cope with. It’s definetly capable of coping with more boost even on pump fuel. The walbro 525 has been installed just in case. It’s the biggest in tank pump that can be installed. My friend who was going to make the pulley is overseas so time to concentrate on some cosmetics.

    • the bbs barells are back and assembled waiting for tyres
    • my m5 cluster has arrived and needs to be installed
    • sport seats to be dyed black to match new interior
    • install konis
    • install sway bars

geez this project never seems to end.
Hope to have it functioning again in a month or so.

Well, I have officially gone over to the dark side. Shipped my S/C 540i up to Zack at 22RPD for turbo/standalone ECU and 800+ rwhp. Engine is already rebuilt and I feel pretty comfortable that 22RPD is run by engineers. My Porsche 997 Carrera S is a lot of fun, but I love that V8 torque + turbo will be pretty fun also. My S/C system will be for sale.. The head unit is a Vortech V2 H/D Ti. It is in my sig.

Cheers mate. I might not be the most popular E34 car guy by a long shot, but I love the E34 since I first laid eyes on her. I was behind the Dinan turbo 540i race car on the GG bridge toll booth. When the Dinan took off after the toll booth, I was hooked for life. e and my E34 took some strange and difficult turns in life, but I always had faith. And thanks to BFC, I met Zack, and the great adventure continues. I hope the E34 crowd will appreciate this. I gave 22RPD the ok to let us into the build over at the FI section soon. Most importantly, this build is in honor of those E34 pioneers here on BFC.

More adjustable power and more efficient. But, more expensive and complex. It is a trade-off. So, let's turn that frown upside down.

The advantage of the turbo is a greater power band and no parasitic losses, with the main disadvantage is the dulling of the exhaust note and with a std engine it’s harder on the internals.

The main joy with the centrifugal supercharger it it keeps the NA characteristics with a frenetic top end rush. The exhaust note is enhanced and it’s more friendly on engine internals handy if using an internally stock engine. The main downside is there is not as much mid range power as a turbo and for efficiency there are parasitic losses
