As stated, it is illegal to knowing vent refrigerant. As for it blowing up in your face. I can speak from experience while looking for a leak on a Chrysler. The line at the rear evaporator gave out. 2.5lbs of Freon and dye square in the face! I don't remember it being overly cold but it does taste like shit. Honestly, best bet just take it to any shop. Probably charge you a half hour to evacuate the system.
