    Post Alarm Siren Replacement

For those '96-'97 owners suffering from a non-functioning alarm siren, I just finished my latest DIY. Parts of it are applicable to pre-'96 models, specifically the tip regarding key fob renewal.

    Enjoy: Alarm Siren Replacement

Sweet write-up. I was wondering if this would solve the problem of my alarm going off randomly when the temperature is above 70?

More importantly this solves the actual location of the siren. I searched high and low and could not find the alternative power siren location in the archives or roadfly. Funny BMW used a sealed unit as there is no reason I can think of on why they would do that. The location alone makes it hardly worth going for it, so if you follow standard part pricing theory (as someone I can't recall stated) then this should be cheap to service once you are in. Why make a sealed case, which I am guessing uses seamed plastic? Not for waterproofing - there are ways around that.

    BMW...always interesting.

    Excellent writeup as always!

...But those Chinese key buttons from eBay are horrible. Call me crazy, but I'd rather look at worn key buttons than a trunk release button for a car that doesn't have a remote trunk release. Even the "unlock" arrow is deformed.

Took my alarm out this weekend. What I found shocked me. The wiring harness connector had actually melted to the alarm due to a possible short. The whole thing required me to basically destroy the connector to get it out. I am not sure what type of connector it is but it is an AMP connector brand. I didn't jot down the wiring but if I can get 12v and ground down I will swap the other two if it doesn't function.

Holy cow. I remember reading on this forum - from TXGR8white, I think - that his caught fire. If needed, try sourcing a replacement connector from Max Lumens or TXGR8white, or post a thread in the parts section. As a minimum, you may be able to splice in common wiring terminals from Radio Shack.

    Good Luck!

Frankie - thanks for the suggestions. I will contact Max as getting to the connectors on the alarm module itself is difficult due to the recessed connector.

Hey sorry for bumping this thread but uh, would replacing the siren solve this problem:
Any temperatures above 70 degrees F or below 35ish degrees F the siren goes off and doesn't turn off until i disarm it with the remote.

No, Something is telling the siren to yell! You have a bad cap or sensor.

Could it be the hood sensor? Still can't find out where the hell it is located.

If you can provide pictures or part numbers that would be great. And if i remove the fuse will i still be able to lock the car with the key?

Thanks TX. Do I need to replace/adjust the hinges themselves (is the sensor mechanical) or can I just pull the fuse for this? Fuse location is the main box?

A million thanks- wouldn't have found that unit in a million years. Interestingly, the old horn was warm to the touch when I removed it- the likely cause of more than one dead battery over the past couple of years!
