Whats a quick way to tell a M44 engine from a M42 engine?

Looks like from 6/1995 up to 1996, it could go either way.

Good one, but without opening the hood stomp it, 1444 means its a 42, nothing at all means 44. I'm assuming the diagnostic ports are different too

    m42 - barn door AFM; m44 - MAF
m42 - mechanical belt driven fan + aux fan in front of radiator; m44 - electrical fan, no aux fan
m42 - air box intake trumpet goes behind driver's side headlight; m44 - big tube running over the radiator to the passenger side headlight
    m42 - aluminum thermostat housing; m44 - plastic

There is more; I'm just sleepy and having a hard time remembering.

Not so true. My M42/M44 hybrid had a main electric fan but is listed (car wise) as a M42 in realOEM, but of course they could be wrong too, lol.

M42 will have the valve cover breather tube at the front whereas the M44 has it at the rear.

^ That's very early m42s. Late m42s like the one in question have it at the back.

^ Although there is a distinction between a m42 and m44: the m44 has a heater hose bundled together with the breather (with like a rubber shrink tubing so that you have to buy both together), whereas the m42 has just the vent hose on its own ... you could cut that banding together and replace the breather with a m42 part on a m44 and not have to pay twice the money and replace the heater hose if it doesn't need it..

^ Again, early (93 and earlier) m42s ... the late m42s are the same as m44.

M42 has dual butterfly throttlebody that looks oval. M44 his single butterfly throttle that is round. But, the most obvious thing you will see when opening the hood is the AFM vs MAF and the engine fan shroud differences. Totally different.... As listed above.
