will 96'+ stock stereo work with 94' cd changer

I just bought a 94 325i. It has the factory tape player from that year. I know they changed the stereo around 96 or 97. The stereo in my car decides to work when it wants to so I am looking at getting another one but probably the updated one as found in the later models e36's if I cant find one like mine. I have the factory cd changer in my car, would the cd changer from my year be able to work with the newer style stereo??? Is it all plug and play???
