HELP Communication between diagnostic system and radio head is disturbed

I am completely new at this and got an OBD-USB cable connected to my netbook with Progman SSS running over VMware.
I cannot connect to my car (06 M3). After I select 'E46' I get this error:
"Communication between diagnostic system and radio head is disturbed."

My car has an aftermarket stereo and I'm pretty sure the harness has been rewired for the aftermarket headunit.
Is that the reason for the error I'm getting? Is there any way around it?

To start, I would like to switch display units to metric and code the mirrors turning down to curb when reversing.

    Thank you.

does your cable work with other software like INPA?

If it works with everything else but just not progman, turn off your firewall, i had the same issue. my head was "connected" and usable but when i tried reading the car, it said it was disturbed. turned off my pc firewall... then everything worked fine.

If cable doesnt work on ANY software, then make sure the usb is set to the same com as in your setup, which is probably com 1. Mine was set to com 3 by default and it didnt communicate the first time.

Thank you. I haven't tried other software. I will try turning off the firewall and report back.

I tried this without firewall or antivirus and I'm still getting the same error message. I'm thinking it's because the stereo wiring harness is not connected due to an aftermarket stereo, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone help answer this? Should the diagnostic software work with aftermarket stereos?

Some things I think it could be, as another newbie, is two things:

    1) may not need diaghead emulator depending on how you get things setup

    2) may need to change properties of cable driver, by right clicking on computer, selecting manage and then chose devices. Need to pick cable, right click on it and change through advanced settings latency to 1 and com to 1.

I'm still trying to figure out the last bit too. So, just trying to share...
