Those who *must* stay with oem modules, usually then purchase the later widescreen monitor, mk4 DVD based GPS computer. It 'might' be a faulty ribbon cable to the TFT panel, or it might be the TFT panel is kaput, it could be a faulty amplifier module and it's not letting the rest of the system work properly, it could be a faulty gps computer not letting the rest of the system work properly - it might be something else and it might be a combination of these.
You can try all the basics, like checking continuity of loom wiring, swapping out known working models that are compatible with your car's build date, you might also want to get NZ specific modules rather than the 'bespoke' Japan modules which don't work in any other territory.
Once you decide your chosen route, you can then progress.
I personally would say remove all the old modules, see if anyone pays you any money for them and move on that way or just junk them. In it's place, put in a premium brand aftermarket modern head unit and gain modern features like bluetooth mobile phone hands free, audio streaming, touchscreens, ipod control, SD card music playback, choice of GPS software and so on.
Cheers, Dennis!
