Hello Bimmer lovers, my 330i is hitting low rpms when idling in drive; around 550. It also hits around 500 rpms when shitting from park to drive or park to reverse. My suspicions are bad spark plugs or a need for new vanos seals? Has about 96,000 miles and it's an 01. Thanks in advance.
Maybe. Have you thought about cleaning ICV?
my first thought is some sort of vacuum leak. I'd start there before ripping out your plugs and vanos
Those both sound like good possibilities. I have done a small amount of research on cleaning the icv but have never actually done anything like it. So, I'll read up on some DIYs. The vacuum leak could be found by pressurizing the system, ya?
I would think vac leak that big would pop a code. Maybe not.Originally Posted by lsteg

no, i used to have po128 but i replaced the thermostat. now it's all good
May be a stupid question, but what specific joints do you mean
Hmmm I guess its not rough per se, but the car vibrates a lot and the door frames rattle. I'm planning on cleaning my icv this weekend just to be sure though
These cars are supposed to idle at 700-750ish, right? Mine's doing the same thing, sitting at about 550, and I have door rattles at idle. Granted, mine is a 325, but I would think it's supposed to be a bit more than the 550 that I'm idling at right now. I'm going to clean the ICV sometime soon and see if that fixes it.
Wouldn't a 325 normally idle higher than a 330?
Dont forget to consider the idle control valve.

Could it be a bad fuel filter?
I'm doing some work on my car this weekend (belts, tensioners, idler, t-stat housing) so while I'm under there I'm going to clean my ICV, I think. Hopefully that helps.

+1^^^ i'm pretty sure i have a small leak in my lower intake boot...
Removed the icv valve.. It was absolutely filthy. Cleaned it out really well so know it makes the little clicky noise when shaken. Then I put it back in and started installing the lower boot. The damn thing ripped apart.
I replaced all the parts and pieces and gave it a test drive last night. I can sadly say that the icv was not my problem. So, any more suggestions?
Did you ever determine the cause? My 325i is doing this and I just completed a substantial amount of work. Rebuilt vanos, rebuilt DISA, new intake manifold gaskets, all new oil seperator lines, cleaned ICV, cleaned TB, new plugs, new valve cover gasket, new oil filter housing gasket, all new rubber intake hoses, new vacuum lines, new fuel filter/pump....I mean, crap - everything! Was pretty amazed when my idle was dropping down to 500 RPM and causing the car to rattle like mad.
Yes, I know it's an old thread. lol

Sounds like an intake leak. You really should have started a new thread, including things specific to your problem, with a little background info. Much easier to help that way.
