Temps on Sunday morning were below freezing and through the first 10 minutes of driving I felt some improvement in shifting but was still kind of sticky between 1st and 2nd.

Just did the Amsoil MTF and 75-140 Diff fluid in my 2000 M roadster. Combined this with a stainless clutch line and removing the delay valve.
It's waaaay better. I can actually feel the detents now.

I had good luck with Amsoil previously and this sounds like it might be good preventative maintenance for my car.

    Z3lda-Crash/burned RIP
Call me Lazy but I put Amsoil in my DD's (09 Mazda 6 and Mazda 3)and change my oil once a year, I average over 30K year on 09 and 15K on 3 and when I do get around to changing them, it looks like any other oil changed at 3 to 5K. Oh and my 6 has that idiot light that comes on to tell me that my oil needs changing...last time it came on I had like 40K since last change, So yeah, I'm a believer.
    Z3lda - R.I.P. 7/6/13 crashed and burned, total loss.

Automatic Trans Fluid, also should not be used in your car:
    Amsoil Multivehicle ATF

Hmmm...I've been using Red Line MTL in all my BMW manual transmissions -track and street forever and been pleased.

Looks like it's almost identical to the BMW OEM Fluid Specs: MTF-LT-2. wonder if I'd see any improvement in going with the 5w/30 seems it'd might be better for the street less so for the track ??

For the diff I've always used the RL 75/90

    Vis @ 40°C, cSt 115

There is loud no-load whine from my diff at 65-85 mph as described by dkindig that I'd love to eliminate wonder if changing out the RL to Amsoil 75w / 110w would help ?? doesn't look too different

    Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt 16.8

    Viscosity @ 40°C, cst 109

    Any thoughts suggestions??

The specs I have on the original BMW fluid is very different.

    cSt@40 c 37.5
    cSt@100 c 7.5
    Viscosity index 172

And the current Pentosin replacement is

    cSt@40 C 38.2
    cSt@100 C 7.7
    VI 177

I do not know about the current pentosin, but the specs you provided now in red are for MTF-LT-1 not MTF-LT-2.

I know there are some mz3's that came with MTF-LT-1 but most that I have seen had the label for MTF-LT-2 and have never seen one that said pentosin on it.

You should not be running anything but 75w140 in your rear diff, which could possibly be why you have noise. However, once the noise has started it is nearly impossible to stop. . .with out a fresh set of gears.

If you track your car regularly then I suggest the thicker MTF :-)

Yes, the "original fluid" is LT-1, as LT-2 was not introduced until the 2004 model year. And at the time of introduction, BMW said LT-1 and LT-2 were fully interchangeable and mixable.

Also, the Pentosin is the current LT-2.

Cool, ill update the main page :-), also if LT2 was not released until 2004 the Bmw replaced badges on a bunch of car made before then. My z3 had LT2 badge on it, interesting.

As indicated in another thread, I just purchased the Pentosin and will try it this time; after running Mobil 1 75W-90LS for @15K miles (3 years). Not sure if I am graduating up or down grading...

I'll send you the pdf I have. I have it at home if I can't dig it up here. As best as I remember,

1990- Green tag = Synth oil
    Orange tag = ATF
    1998 Yellow tag = LT-1
    2004 Green tag = LT-2
    2006 Blue tag = LT-3

    EDIT:

http://billswebspace.com/BMWOperatin...rans230409.pdf This appears to be the manual trans section of the same document.

So the Mazda 6 oil change computer said the AMSOIL did not need changing for 40,000 miles? Wow, you should tell AMSOIL. I was an AMSOIL dealer back in the 1980s and their oil sure has gotten a lot better now. Or maybe the computer programming has.

Two of our cars have oil change computers, and when they say 50%, the oil is between 5,000 and 10,000 miles but looks so black and nasty that I can't bear to leave it in.

AMSOIL does recommend 75W140 for limited slip differentials. For my 1.9 they only recommend 75W-90 :

Why do you say using anything other than 75W140 could actually cause damage to a differential? That is not likely what BMW specified for any of its differentials. Do you know what BMW specified (I don't) ?

Yes it does, it also states that the use of any unapproved synthetic lube will cause damage. Lucky for us this is in the section on transmissions that use mineral GL4.

I always thought the oil change computer went on driving style/mileage calculations and not actual oil condition.

Completed the fluid changes yesterday with Pentosin MTF2 (tranny) and Mobil 1 75W-140 (differential). The Mobil 1 was previously in the differential and was an even replacement. The Pentosin replaced Mobil 1 75W-90LS in the tranny. Went for a @25 mile drive and I can say that the tranny fluid is an upgrade from the Mobil 1 for the Z3. The shifts were easier than with the Mobil 1 when cold, and felt at least as damped throughout the drive. The Z3 also felt more responsive (butt feel). Though I did not have drivetrain noise (notable whine etc.) with Mobil 1, the Z3 was quieter last night (butt feel again).

For the 1.9L yes 75w90 is what you want, for 6 cyl non m cars (2.3,2.5,2.8,3.0) 75w110 is perfect, and the 75w140 is what is recommend for the m cars :-)
