I am currently running 16" BMW E31 Style 8 wheels on my 1988 M6. Someone wants to trade his 16" E28 M5 wheels and some other goods for my wheels. Will these wheels offer the proper offset on my M6? I haven't noticed any E24s running these wheels. Thanks for any help.

It should be a direct swap. Knowing the dimensions of the wheel and the offset would help greatly. Usually under 20mm will work on a 6. I'm running 7mm front and 3mm rear, and still not happy. However, they should fit without interference if they are 20 or less.
I personally like the 16" E31 wheels (assuming that they are the "sawblade" model), better than stock E28 M5 on a 6. But that's personal opinion.

The 850 wheels are et15, and the E28 m5 will be et20.
You should be able to put them on without problems, they will just be in towards the center of the car 5mm
All personal preference, but they should work. Some people just like the style 5 wheels or wider wheels than the E28 M5 wheels (which I think are 7.5in).
The cars are exactly identical except for the bodies. Anything that fits one fits the other.
Thanks for the input guys. It is starting to seem like a bad deal. I really do love the way the 8 series wheels sit on the car. I will likely just stay with them.

The e24 and e28 chassis are the same, wheels have essentially the same dimensions as long as you adjust for metric (TRX) vs standard.
Only issue I have had with e24,e28,e32,e34 wheels have been a caliper interference issue with non M e34 style 5 15" wheels on M6 that worked perfectly when mounted on e24 with the 750 front brake upgrade. M6 does have an unknown service history, so my hubs may be wrong, fix was a simple thin spacers to provide some clearance.
