Who made the software update and the rear axle ratio for your E38? After much consideration, I don't think I will supercharge or turbocharge my E38. I haven't test my car yet, but according to magazines, my 01 740i Sport goes 0 ~ 60 in about 5.9 ~ 6.1 sec. I like to shave 0.5 sec off it, but without going to Dinan route. Thought about a 3.46 diff from VAC.The E38 is TwinTurboCharged with a peak hp of around 480. It produces over 700Nm of torque and with the modified g-track transmission and a modified rear axle ratio it has become quite quick.....
btw, you can accelerate your M62 Cars 0-60mph by about a second 6.6sec -> 5.6sec just by doing a software update...
Our new software is able to produce an extra of 50Nm and 40-60hp in M62 engines without being hazardous to the engine.
The M62 is the most upgradable engine by BMW (normally aspirated) I have knowledge of. The engine has been downgraded by BMW by software, because the power of the M62 was in range of the V12 engine. So it had to be locked up to keep distance to the V12. Just by reprogramming it with the routines originally developed for the M62 you can add some serious power (about 32hp) to the unmodified engine!
I had a 97 740i with Dinan Stage 4, that didn't do much for that E38.
JL
Well the software update I did myself. Based on Alpina routines.
A friend of my father (They went to school together) was chief engineer for engines at Alpina for some 30 years... He is retired now, but I still have some good contact. The rear axle had a mod by Hartge. They do anything you want for u. Just gotta ask. Transmission was ZF.
The 0-60 spec shows the difference. I used figures from 0-100kph and deleted .2sec -> The spec by BMW is 6.6-6.8 sec for 0-100kph and 5.9-6.1 0-60mph. From that I figure that with a good reprogramming and the correct fuel choice, along with some aspiration mods (High flow air intake - cold air intake) you can get even more than the .5sec you want. I think about 1.0 or more is possible.
Greetings,
Marc

How much does this software cost? And how can i get it onto my 740?
John
Installation of the SW is not that easy anymore... On OBD I Cars thereīs no big deal. Just swap the chips. They are plugged in. (I put up a how to in here some weeks ago). I can give you sent you a fully programmed chip. Will be around $150
On OBD II Cars the chip is soldered into the Mainboard of the DME. So most Tuners tend to unload the software from the DME, recalibrate the software, load up the new routines onto DME, and then reinstall the whole thing... Pricing around $1500
I am working on means how to upgrade OBD II Cars without making all that fuss... I once soldered a reprogrammed chip onto a OBD II DME - That worked perfectly... But it is, in fact, hazardous for the DME. If you do something wrong, you can destroy your DME. Replacement is around $500...

@TexBeamer
Looking at your pic I assume you have an OBD I Car?!? There a SW Update is no real big deal. As said, the chip would be around $150.- + shipping..

How can i tell if i have OBD I or OBD II? I have a 97, 740IL. Last seven digits of the vinL42987
John
All cars built after 1995 are OBDII.

Thank You,

John
That is not entirely correct. The 740 M60 of ī96 are OBD I, too...
But it is a good guideline

May I please have this clear? My 1995 740i is in fact a OBDI vehicle? Generically, what is the difference? This is an area of the car that I have not investigated as yet.
Thanks.

This is an old post of Simeon's.
JLRe: turbocharged or supercharged 750il Shadowchaser, The M70 is an OBDl and the M73 is an OBDll motor. The OBDl is tunable and will retain the new programming, whereas the OBDll will not retain the programming.
OBDll is designed to be adaptive to emissions readings it takes during operation of the vehicle and will adjust the ECU map back to the OEM parameters based upon what it senses. Aftermarket tuners are just now beginning to decode the OBDll algorithm. Within a few years you may see more & more performance tuning for OBDll aplications.
Mechanically, twin turbo is possible for any motor. Bolting on a compressor either SC or TC is certasinly do-able. The problem is the ECU mapping. on an E38, you would need a 1995 or earlier motor with an OBD1 ECU, and then of course a transmission capable of tolerating that kind of hp & torque.
Cheers

Matt,
I guess the after 1995 is what got me, meaning after 1995 and not including 1995. Anyway, thanks
Randy
OK, many here know a lot more about this than I, but here's my limited memory dump.Originally posted by rango44

OBD stands for "OnBoard Diagnostics" and is a "system" that electronically monitors our cars. Monitors in our case means many things, but includes engine management, among others.
I THINK that it was mostly a federally mandated thing (EPA?), and the OBDII requirement (introduced in the U.S. for all post-1995 cars) was much more complicated/restrictive in its workings. What this means for modding our cars is that OBDI cars can swap out a chip (just like adding memory in a computer) in their ECU to change fuel mapping, etc., and gain power but the OBDII crowd pretty much must download a software change to remap their ECU...
I say pretty much because Tranceshark did make reference to soldering, but that is not practical (nor safe) for most of us...
OK, now I need a nap.
@JLe38
That old post really explained it in a good manner. Sometimes my English is just missing the correct words to explain something the way I want to express it.
@segal3
Thanks for that info. Didnīt know about the requirement. In Germany we have OBD I cars up to ī97. In fact all M60 powered 740īs are OBD I.
@Reed Hunt
What you say is correct. I do also agree to the soldering standpoint. It is, in fact, not easy, nor perfectly safe. That should always be done at a specialized company or by a guy who knows what heīs doing

ok fill me in please!
my BMW 740 has a build date of 12/96. correct me if im wrong, but thats OBD II and it has an M60 engine.
please put me in the right if im wrong here.
That would be a America only thing...
As I said. Over here the E38īs M60 are all OBD I...
If there is this particular difference in the states - you would have an OBD II car since itīs an 96 -> even the ī97 model !!!!
To correctly answer that for you I would need help from someone your side of the pond... Sorry.
