Yes Mihai, Mobil acquired ESSO some time ago and now markets a Mobil fluid designated "Mobil LT 71141". It is unclear how this relates to the previously ZF recommended ESSO LT 71141, especially since the new Mobil LT 71141 does fluid not specifically mention use with the ZF transmissions that the ESSO fluid did call out. See attachment. No issue just going with the ZF fluid.

If you are filling, make sure you can measure fluid temp and fill to the lower 30C range if you have a transmission that calls for this. See second attachment.

Note: under the "Maintenance recommendations ZF automatic transmissions" section of the "List of lubricants TE-ML 11" document, the oil change interval for the 4HP20, 5HP24, 5HP30 with Maintenance-free fills and "Sporty Driving Style" duty is between 50k and 75k miles!!
    So now we know!

Yes, BMW really did a dis-service with the "Life Time" fluid line.

I used Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF. Drained, refilled, run through gears, drain, drop and clean pan and magnets, install new FILTRAN filter, button her up and fill. Don't cheap-out on the filter, the cheap ones will not work properly and can starve the trans for fluid. Castrol specs: http://www.castrol.com/castrol/secti...tentId=7028224
I've used Castrol IMV ATF in the 5HP24 in my former 540i and it worked very well. No complaints so far running in the 5HP30.

I called today to a automatic transmision service and they sayed that is not so important the brand of the oil. MUST look at the specifications and respect them and will get no problem...

The Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF is not a Synthetic nor a Synthetic Blend, correct? It is a cheap option at ~$6 a quart. Would not be my choice. Just a firm believer in synthetic oil technology.

100% agree. Also, I ended up using the Febi/Bilstien fluid as it references to the Esso shizz. Wasn't cheap ($16 a bottle) but no issues after the flush and filter.

Just wanted to update this thread....Found the following while researching fluids. It appears the Pentosin ATF1 _is_ Esso LT71141 and Pentosin also manufactures ZF Lifeguard5. ATF1 is available for about $12\L in case quantities.

To make it easier with filling from bottom, for the filling procedure we modified a simple 1 liter garden sprayer, the spray nozzle we cut off and attached on the pipe a hose which in diameter is thin enough to go thru the hole into the trans pan, here pics

I just did a stupid thing: replace my 1993 740i E32 bmw transmission fluid by valvoline maxlife AFT which said it may equivalent to Shell LA 2634. however, when i replaced, the trans slips every time when I accelerate the car. have to purchase a OEM shell la 2634.

Did you properly fill it up at the correct temperature with lights on that RPM goes a bit higher and shifting thru all gears slowly? Check once more, http://www.europeantransmissions.com...ansService.pdf
sounds to me like a low trans fluid level, others do not complain with E32 740

Thanks, Shogun, i benefit a lot from your postings.the car also occasionally stall when driving so I think it is the trany fluid does not compatible with the specifically designed 5HP30 with black tag. I will purchase the fuchs' Titan 3353 to try and will post my result here.

i just ordered online Titan 3353, also said an equivalent to LA2634. I ordered 8 liters and plan to do the drain and fill twice: first 3.78L and after mixed with the residual, I do the drain and fill the second time: another 3.78L. My question is: how many litters totally used in ZF 5hP30? I read from Bentley bible said the dry one will need 5.5 litters and someone said the total ATF used in 5HP30 is 13 Litters, I am confused.

    - - - Updated - - -

I just get the info that, 13 litter with the torque converter, and 5.5 litter without the torque converter.

So, any updates on the Titan 3353 use.... did you change another 4 quarts/liters? How much maxlife did you put in the trans, you may need to remove more maxlife, it is all about dilution of the unwanted oil.

Also when accelerating at a sporty rate you may be low on oil. After experimenting on a leaky jeep transmission, on tight turns the transmission was slipping, add a quart and problem solved.

So ehhh - whats the latest and greatest fluid to use in the 5HP30?

I sold my 750 however the new owner has a few of them, and has not serviced the slushboxes, so I wanted to provide him with instructions on
what type of fluid to buy. Last i recall Esso?

    740ilDuke,

Good luck on finding the Esso ATF! I used Castrol Transmax import Multi-vehicle ATF. The specifications on the jug state it is equivalent to the Esso product. Price was $25 per gallon, or $6.25 per qt. I have a green label 5HP30 transmission in the '97 840Ci.

I disconnected the left side ATF coolant pipe/hose that goes into lower left corner of the bottom of the radiator, and refilled the transmission 3-4 times - each time running the engine with the trans in neutral - until the output from that pipe was bright red (this effectively purges the torque converter). Then, about 3 more 'refills after replacing replacing the hoses to the radiator (new 'O' rings), until the temp and level in the transmission met specs. Overall, I used a bit over 16 qts of new ATF.

Also, I determined that Bilstein/Febi was the OE supplier to BMW for the transmission filter, so installed a Febi (replacing a Filtran). Transmission performance is now excellent.

Good luck to the new owner.

You need to specify if your 5HP30 is a black label or a green label. Green label is less finicky when it comes to fluid choices, black label is the trickier (and more expensive) one to flush and fill.
