Thumbs up for Autowerke/Autoy. I took my car by this morning for a front strut swap estimate. I told them what prevented me from doing it myself (couldn't pop out tie rod from steering knuckle safely) and they said often don't need to do that, just unbolt/loosen control arms inboard. Not many shops will tell you how to DIY, I think.

Any decent shops in Southeast VA? Based on what I'm reading here they're all in NOVA. I'd like to find something under 1 hour away so I can drop it off.

I'm also looking for someone who knows what their doing when they work on BMW's in the Pittsburgh area.

Need some electrical work done(brake light circuit problem)
And possibly some other engine work when I narrow down what the problem is.
Also ABS light comes on everytime I drive.

For folks between Baltimore and DC, just want to recommend AtSpeed Motorsports in Hanover MD (very close to Arundel Mills mall near 100 @ 295.

Don't know if they've been mentioned here, as they're primarily a P-car shop, but they are getting into BMW work lately, and I just got my DE tech inspection done there (free!). Also had them bleed the brakes; although I could've done that m'self, missus tenfifteen is not a fan of sitting in a car for half an hour and being told to push the brake pedal repeatedly.

They also do Dinan work (believe they are an official distributor/installer), and were prepping a club-racer E36 M3. They had a few beautiful Porsches on the 'showroom' floor as you come in, including a new Cayman S Design Edition. Flippin' gorgeous. This is the same AtSpeed that built the S60R Volvo for Speed Challenge a few years back.

Ask for Kent... great shop, very friendly.

For the folks in the Richmond area, I would recommend Ralf Sarek of Sarek Autowerke. Very reasonable ($65.00/hr), nice guy. Definitely won't try to get you to do other things to your car. Takes care of "your" needs. He'll even work with you on pricing and parts.

Worked on my car recently and I"m very pleased, he's extremely knowledgeable.

From my understanding he used to work at Richmond BMW. Has excellent tools, GT1 software, etc.

His shop is located in Colonial Heights, few minutes away from Virginia State U.

For northern VA / dc area i cant believe no one has mentioned Curry's

i wouldn't take my car anywhere else for any important work. i would goto the sterling location, or chantilly. seriously good stuff there, you get what you pay for.

I'm taking my car here tomorrow for an alignment and such. Any input on these guys? A few friends of mine that frequent VIR highly recommended them.

Edit: Update. Went and loved the place. The two things I loved:
1. They know what they're doing
2. They didn't "speak down" to me or treat me as if I were stupid. Being a female, this is very important.

I dont think I posted it yet but stay away from M&J in bel air MD. My car went in for inspection and left with 50 more miles along with a new gas leak and a failed inspection. Upon asking them about the gas leak they said it was there before the car came in which is BS.

Has anyone had experience with EDA motors in Mclean VA on Old Dominion Drive? They are housed in a Chevron station. They advertise that they are BMW specialists and I often see both vintage as well as late model BMW's parked outside.

So I just called Alexandria Bavarian Service and the guy on the other end was rude.

I asked him "I have an M5 and would like to have two mufflers installed."

His Reply: "No we don't do that at all. Bye"

WTF!!! He hung up before I could even say anything else.

I called him two years ago and said the warranty was up on my 2003 325Ci and that I was looking for an independent mechanic. He told me I should just get rid of the car because it would cost too much to keep up. Funny, the car is still doing great.

They've done all my work on my e34 (including an engine & transmission rebuild), and a number of other cars i've had taken there, very honest, way below dealer costs, and quality work. they work on 99% bmw's. Great guys!

I used to live in DC and I also tried calling Alexandria Bavarian Service. I actually had to stop the guy and ask what have I done to piss you off and can we start over again. I think I was looking to have something done to my z3 coupe. Needless to say I didn't end up going there and I don't know how that place stays in business. I wish this thread was around when I lived in DC. I typically went to J&F and I never had any problems with them. They were on the pricey side but did good work.

On to Pittsburgh Dealerwise I love Sewickley BMW they treat their customers great. A&L have treated me indifferently. P&W treated me like a nuisance which is a shame because I live less than a mile from them but I would rather drive the extra 15 miles to go to Sewickley.

Indys well you can read the thread about Bill Ballon and form your own opinion or just call him. Its a lot like calling Alexandria Bavarian Service.
