I used pop rivets on the front mount (I can't remember for the rear mounts) and I have tracked the hell out of the car for past several years and the tank is still held firmly in place.
I also cut the end of mine off and used some soft line to route the remainder to the tank. It works well and I like having the hard line running that close to the hot engine.

Does the metal brackets that you all are discussing the different ways you attached it to the strut tower and under the ecu compartment, come with the expansion tank when you order it or is there a separate part number for them both? Also, does an expansion tank cap come with the new euro expansion tank like the US versions do or does the same cap work on either tank?

It comes with the BW kit, the tank will come with just the tank if you order only a tank.

    Hey guys,
I just thought I would let you know with what I came up with regarding using the regular leveling sensor.
I was first thinking that all I had to do was turn the float around since the metal ring is on the other side but that didn't work.
So, I put it in the correct orientation and marked where the ring should be when full.
The ring should be in the center of the "slide."
I then measured and cut the float so if I were to put it upside down, the ring would be in the middle of the slide when the sensor would be reading full.
It beats the 50+ bucks for a sensor and waiting for it to come from Europe.
    I 've attached pictures.

Sorry if this has been discussed in the past.

Just for the information, #41122256492 is supposed to be mounted to the firewall but what part has to be mounted to the strut tower? I want the OEM solution please
Also for the ones interested, I looked up the current prices of the required parts and it comes to a total of 272.52 euros which is roughly 300 USD. This does not include OBD1 to OBD2 bracket nor the EGR plate.

The original is spot-welded to the strut tower sheet metal. I drilled and bolted mine; some people pop-rivet them. Before committing it's important to fine tune the bracket's position with the tank in place, since there's not much clearance above the coolant tank cap to the hood liner.

I used pop-rivits for mine, just be sure you have them in the right spots before doing it. "Measure twice cut once".

My cap has left an indent in the foam liner in the engine bay, its no big deal.

I heard the brackets were going NLA or have become pricey.

Same here. You want the tank high, but not too high.

Mine came with a complete kit from Bimmerworld.

It used to be possible to order Euro parts through any local BMW dealer, but that's no longer the case. You may need to find a source in Europe. I've bought VAG Euro parts from e-ACCA.com (in Latvia). Don't know if they do BMW.

I am also looking to piece this kit together for a track only car. For the expansion tank, there is a hole on the top for the coolant level sensor I believe...

Does anybody know how I can get this block off instead of putting in the sensor, like in this pictures posted earlier in the thread?

I'm not positive but I think it comes with the tank when bought new. I know my E36 overflow tank did.

I think the E30 used the same tank, so check E30 parts listing. I probably have one of those somewhere. You could also adapt something. A dummy sensor maybe.

I would go on r3v and buy somebody's broken e30 sensor if all I wanted is to cover the hole.

I found a cap off an e46 coolant tank at a local pick n pull, it seems to be a common cap size for bmws. I can post a picture of mine if you'd like.

Bump just to say it sucks that there are so many photos hosted on Photobucket that are no longer viewable.

The level sensor for the E36 Euro expansion tank (61312250421) is no longer available. Is there an E30 equivalent that will substitute?

Ping Schmiedman for the correct part. I'll bet they can order it. And the exchange rate is such that even with shipping, their prices are more competitive than you would think.

Bumping this years later because these are the best photos I’ve found on where to mount the brackets for the euro coolant tank.

Ok, mounting the back bracket like the above makes the tank too high in the rear and the fluid level wouldn’t be close to level. I ended up lowering just the rear mount 1inch. The foil tape And RTV in this photo covers the previous rivet holes. I basically mounted the rear bracket as low as I could before hitting something.
