Love me a good road course. Looks like it has good runoff too.

Congrats on earning your Pro2! Any plans to pursue it? I assume that would require a new chassis?

I would love to pursue it, but I don't think I have the budget to run all the rounds. I would have to modify my cage in this chassis a bit but then it would be legal. Pro2 has a spec tire size now though, so I believe the lightest car will be the most competitive. It would probably be in my best interest to build a new chassis with a lighter cage that meets FD spec, as mine is extremely heavy.

If I can get enough support from sponsors/partners to do it, I will definitely make a go at it.

I believe you still have to be 2900lbs w.driver though? Dylan Hughes had to add a shit ton of weight to run Seattle this year

Thanks! I'll definitely try to get the stars to align to do it.

I'm honestly not 100% sure. Either way it would be better to have the car 100-200 lbs lighter and then ballast up in the right areas to make it ideal.

Here's an outside run from a Top 8 follow - Thanks to The Beam Team | Brian for shooting the video!

Mike, it looks like you have your engine setup dialed in! What is your preferred BMW engine build for drifting at this point? (block, crank, rods, head, cams, pistons, head gasket, head studs, anything else you feel is important)?

Right now I'm really liking the turbo M5X platform, and I think if I build another it will be that or S54. The combo that seems to work best is:

    84mm block (M50 or M52)
    M54B30 or S52 crank
    Eagle rods
    Forged pistons
Dual oil pickup from Euro E36 M3 or S54
    JE cutring head gasket
ARP head studs (I have 11mm L19 and drilled/tapped the block, but I don't think that's necessary with the cutring)
Supertech dual spring and Ti valve retainer
    Supertech 1 piece valves
    S50, S52, or Schrick cams
Retain VANOS and stock ECU tuning

That's about it, and seems to work really well and reliably at 650whp. I think it could make 700 if I turned it all the way up but realistically I don't need any more power, even on a Pro1 level tire. If I can magically find a bunch more grip and suddenly need more, I may turn it up but right now 25psi and 600-650 is plenty for anything I need to do.

I had eagle rods with wiseco pistons on my turbo S52 build, the piston couldn't articulate... So uh, pick a known good combo before you sink money into a build.

No kidding? I've run Wisecos with Eagles in 4-bangers before. They were a titties combo for sure.

7000. I actually run an S50 crank, but if I were to build another I would go with the M54B30 or S52 crank like I listed. You can run higher if you dare, but the 2nd harmonic is really bad at 7400 rpm on the S52 and M54B30 cranks. The 2.8 and 3.0 aren't quite as bad, but still have their issues. Even with a 7000 limiter, I can hit it so hard spinning in 4th gear on the run up that I've seen 7600 on datalogs, which is a pretty insane overshoot. I try to stay off the limiter as much as I can, but it just hits it so easily, so it's at 7k for now, and I have an ATI damper on it as well. If you can swing one of those, that's another great addition to a serious M5X drift build.

TRM spec'd my wisecos custom back in 2009, and these are just off the shelf eagles that have been balanced to match each other, etc. They are only 8.5 compression so I imagine I would get some nice spool gains if I build something closer to 10.5 or 11:1 since I'm using E85 all the time now.

Thanks again for all of the info Mike!

Is there a big PITA with setting up (or sourcing) an ATI damper, or is it just the expense that gets in the way. Maybe there's an issue with the crank trigger wheel or something?

I got mine from Dan at Pure Performance in California. It's mainly the expense, and I think some versions of the damper didn't have a trigger wheel, so if you're OBD1 you're SOL without that. OBD2 no issue since it's not front mounted. I'm OBD2, but actually have a trigger wheel on mine and use a front mounted crank trigger from a '99 euro 328.
