Definatly is a really nice build, going to have to look into this for myself!

Awesome thread/write up!! Will save me some $$$ from the S52 conversion I was planning.
What do you think of the following sound... it's short but you'll hear the sound just fine

looks sick
e36 325i project, 2010 dodge charger DD
can the m50 rod bearings be used in the m54 rods?
Sounds pretty grunty!
im just wondering, now that the engine is a s50 clone, do i now buy aftermarket parts for the engine and car (i.e supercharger kits, CAI or headers) as if it were a m3 s50 or can i still use aftermarket m50 parts?
Your motor would still be the m50, you would just call it stroked. The make/model of your car doesn't change.Originally Posted by StatePark E36
It won't be M50 anymore because M50 came in 2L and 2.5L displacement. In USA only in 2.5L.
For this "S50" clone you buy all aftermarket parts as if it is true S50
Many people don't know that S50(in usa) and 1993-1995 M50 is basicly the same engine and all aftermarket parts will bolt on. And M52 is basicly the same as S52. This was talked over and writen over and over again but you just can't explain it to noobs! Power of a badge, the M3 that is in the USA market is not true M3 it is just 325is with more displacement and few more minor upgrades. True M3 is in europe with beast of an engine, too much power for US market. But germans knew that average american is a drug addict so they can get away with just putting in stroked M50 engine slapping on M3 badge on the trunk lid and make americans pay more for the same...(i.e supercharger kits, CAI or headers)
It was more of a case of very strict emissions regulations in US mate, it's not that they didn't want to market a true M3 over the pond, it's just that they couldn't. At least IMO.
Thanks for the info hakentt. Im new to the Bmw scene as u could tell. I just know from my years of experience as a mechanic that these engines can be temperamental when not done right
I'm going to do this to my 92. Probably take me a month to get started but I am going to do it. Will start a thread when I start.
I thought of the same operation for my -92 as well, but I wonder if the head on the non-VANOS engine would make any difference?
I was saving to go FI, but I really think I'll be doing this instead now. Thanks for doing all the homework for us Haken.
Just wondering about a tune, and injectors.
Hakentt- I hate to be that guy, but that doesnt look like a M50 in your video. A M50 has the oil filler at the back of the valve cover. Did you swap valve covers and plastics or what?
Yes I have put the 1996-1999 valve cover and coils on it. I found a very good deal on valve cover, M power cover and coils, the guy was local and tought he needed those flaky M50 valve covers when converting to OBD1 so I took advantage of it and bought it all from him for $80 now my M50 "aka S50 clone" looks mole like "S52 clone", the more you know the cheaper you can make your BMW look cool. This is why lots of BMW fanatics hate me here, they don't want me to spill the secrets to the noobs

Hey Hakentt since the m50b25 m52b25 and m54b30 all have the same bore 84mm,
and the m52 and the m54 rods are the same and the pistons look the same as well.
Does this mean that the piston rings from a m52 piston can be used on a m54 piston.
I am interested cus I am currently in this build process, and need lots of help.
I would appreciate it.
M54B28 , M52 has thicker rings and taller piston.Does this mean that the piston rings from a m52 piston can be used on a m54 piston.
M54B30 does not have the same pistons nor the rings as 2.8L
Look for a overheated block from M54 3.0L localy it is the cheapest and best way, don't be like puertoricans trying to buy all different parts thinking it will come out cheaper, it won't.
One question, Can this be done with the block still installed in the car or does it need to be pulled?
I understand that the head needs to be removed but I just wanted to know if the crankshaft could be installed with the engine mounted still. Thanks for the quick reply.
