Vanos gear that is bolted to the camshaft has to be shortened 4mm as you can see in the photo fresh grinding marks. Ones you compare your stock cam with m54 cam you will know what I am talking about.

Any idea if there are any other OEM pistons that will work with this setup? I can find an s52 crank and m52 rods, but I can't find m54b30 pistons for a reasonable price at all.

@op when you said you re-used main bearings and rod bearings , were those from the m50 or m54

also why did you have to shorten vanos gear / what kind of grinder was used?

forgot to ask if the m50 head was used or something else?

Could I use an s50 rotory assembly in an m50 block?

Yes, but you would have to bore it out, which would probably make it not worth it. It's cheaper just to buy the whole S50 block and use the M50 head, which is the same.

I've done quite a few S50 kits, if you choose right you can find something that uses all stock sensors and preserves full VANOS operation... my suggestion is Vi-PEC or Pectel; we've tried them all and these are our choice.

How do you feel about the Miller Performance W.A.R. Chip system?

so this is a direct replacment not a piggy back, so i would need them to tune it by dyno or tell the specifacs of the car. The only dealer in Alberta is in calgary which is about 3.5 hours away meaning an expensive tow or trailer rental. but seems legit and understandable. what did you do to use this vi- PEC?

Nice job man! Simple and concise. Thinking of doing the same in the summer. Any particular bits I should have in mind before starting the build?

I have a question... I plan on using the M54 intake camshaft, so I would only use the M54 tray and lifters for the intake side, correct? Just leave the M50 stuff on the exhaust side?

The shadows suggest it is.......looks really neat

    How's that?

I have seen some nice M54B30 shoehorned into an E36.

Shoehorned? An M54 is no larger than the M50/M52 engines that came in the E36.

An M73 in an E36 would have to be shoehorned in, but even that is not impossible.

Well that was my point. Because the OP said it was a tough one to fit.

Which means I have mixed up the meaning of "shoehorned" in. I thought that meant it was an easy fit. Like how you easily slide into a shoe with a shoehorn.
So I guess it means the opposite.

The same as any 3 liter m50 based engine with similar compression i.e. the same as an s50

Well a simple answer would have been nice, I could have said will it produce 1/3 as much as a LS1 or double that of a Chevy Vega GT Engine

It doesn't get much simpler than that... An S50 makes 240hp.

That was only for one other guy that did something different in the build (I don't remember what).

The OP has the engine running with a good AFR, as far as I know.

That would be a huge HP gain if my little S52 ever goes south
