Hello everyone, Long time reader first-time poster. lol
I've got an M52B28 that I'm pretty much overhauling and have an M54B30 Crank. I'm planning on using my stock M52B28 rods with custom pistons. Was thinking about honing the block to fit a bigger position, not sure what size yet, and raising compression to 11:1. I have S52 cams and am going to be porting the head, upgrading the valve springs etc.
I've been back and forth on the M54B30 crank because I've been reading that it wouldn't have the best rod ratio, undersquare stroke/bore, etc. I figure honing the block will help make it more square than it was. I'm planning on using this in my E36 track car and my logic was rather than buying and building an S52 I could just use the money I would have spent on an S52 and go a little extra on my current motor.

I'm just asking - the post initially on the first page and replies made it look like the guy had posted some good information, be it then or now. There's a difference between researching, posting your info and then removing it (like someone we know here) and I just wanted to know if there's a post with information by this guy or anything.

He is a pretty successful swap or modification guy on bmws. I know he did this, started the m54b30 swaps into older cars, came up with some crazy tunes for multiple stock car ecu's from the little I've come across in the years. He doesn't seem an active e36 guy anymore and has prolly moved on to most recent new models of various car manufacturers in tinkering.

Wanna make a 3.0 stroker.
1st of all S52 is not a option. M3s are extremely rare here in Brazil, impossible to find the engine solo.
I thinking M54 crank and rods, M52 pistons (M54 are different?)
M50 intake manifold
M54 intake cam.
But don't know which exhaust cam I can use.

OEM M52 ECU, Tuned M52 ECU or Programable ECU?
If useing a m54 intake cam, just use the stock exhaust cam. Exhaust cams have the same profile from m50 to m50tu and m52 and m54 across all displacement. The only engines that had higher profile exhaust cam was s50 or s52.
M52 and m54 are dual vanos so they dont fit.
Getting a regrind cam setup is overall the best option if not going s cams or the aftermarket.

M52 is single Vanos, M52TU is dual Vanos.
Cams:
M50B25nv // int: 240º(9.7mm) // exh: 228º(8.8mm)
M52B28 // int: 230º(9.0mm) // exh: 228º(9.0mm)
M54b30 // int: 240º(9.7mm) // // exh: 244º(9.0mm)
M50 NV intake degree is very near to M54 exhaust.

Apologies for reviving this old thread, however, I am in the process of doing an M50B25TU stroker build and wasn't clear on whether or not there's a concensus on removal of the trigger /impulse wheel that's attached to the rear part of the S52/M54B30 crankshafts via 3 bolts. I believe this wheel is needed for the crank position sensor for the OBD2 setup, which in my case, wouldn't apply (car will remain OBD1).
Does this wheel serve as any type of structural member to the crank, which I've seen reference in at least one older post, or is this safe to remove when installing the crank into an M50 block?
Edit: I will be having the rotating assembly balanced regardless, just need to understand if the impulse wheel can be removed.

The crank is balanced WITH those parts. Leave them on. If you remove, it will be hard to balance, if you even can remove it and balance it, you will probably end up with horrible harmonics. Especially if ever FI.

It's hard to dig up any specific information related to the wheel/ring, but from what I've found, there's an equal mix of people that have advocated for removal vs. keeping installed.
What's interesting is the older forum posts seem to advocate for removal (including the original video from the OP) because of a potential fitment concern into the M50 block, but this doesn't actually seem to be the case.
M3blitkrieg's comment in this thread scares me a bit, as he indicated there have been cranks that have failed due to removal of the wheel, but I wasn't able to find any specific examples myself.
Unfortunately I prematurely removed my wheel because of these earlier comments/suggestions that I read, but it looks like the smart thing to do would be to re-install it and then have everything balanced.
He is actually a friend of mine that lives nearby. And yes, there have been many cases of 3.0l m54 cranks snapping at that particular point during hard autox and other track uses. However, over the years there haven't been any cases of the crank failure that have the trigger wheel components still on. Atleast that have been shared to my knowledge. At one point in this e36 section and the auto section there were several of these threads. Over the years they have been deleted for space conservation I beleive.
