So back in 2009, I saw BMW4Life build his spec e36. Of course it was a white car and I always wanted a white one for how clean they can be.
His undercarrage looked like this:
Then after a detail:
I am wondering if on the older cars, if they did not have the under side painted like the top? I think my underside is grey for the undercoating? Unless it is just 20 years of road grime and oil that needs to be removed? I quickly tried some brake parts cleaner and engine degreasing gel and it did not make too much of a dent...
Has anyone got their pre-96 undercarrage clean? Crazy, I know....
What's with all M-Technic's being trashed these days?! Mine was so far gone after I got it home that I called it a lost cause and got rid of it. Nice to see someone bring it back up to par.
I have noticed earlier E36's were painted inside the trunk jams and engine bay with nice glossy paint, and later ones were more of just a base coat of the exterior color that's very dull or even gray on the blacks etc. However from my experience most are just a gray/tan on the under chassis regardless of being earlier or later models.

Looks good man, Ill prob come snag those headlights from you this weekend.
Nice job bro!!
Started to clean up the new front M3 hubs that came up from the black car. I did notice that one of the wheel bearings is trashed. Got Dave Markert getting me another one!
Started getting the front brakes all restored. Ordered the overhaul kit with new seals and whatnot so theyll be like new
The brakes on the white car were absolutely terrible when I drove it. These should help!!!
Not sure if I will sell these or use them. Offers anyone ?$?$?
Shop cat that wont go away. Its in my tool bag of all places. It is also the only cat that I think is or ever will be cool haha.
Cool pic of my hand! No not a halloween trick haha!
Got my front subframe all cleaned up. I got the front subframe reinforcements to install as well. Should be nice!
Started cleaning up the rear calipers:
Nothing like foamy engine gel!
Cleaned/degreased:
Doing the same thing to the rear trailing arms... I got these from an automatic M3 convertable with only 70k miles!
Light coat of paint to keep them fresh for years to come
Ready to rock!
I also ordered all new balljoints and some AKG rear trailing arm bushings to tighten everything up
Got in a ton of parts.
Got new gaskets for the exhaust manifold. Just something small ive never had before. They are shiny when new. The pic unfortunately isnt that great.
All new oil pan gasket
Pan pulled off the motor. Secured the oilpump nut as well. I was hoping to find that the pan would be baffled but it isnt. Oh well

Good progress friend!
We doing subframe bushings on the new M3 as well? haha
Got my M3 rear subframe in and all cleaned up. Its lookin pretty nice. I already got the new diff bushing in but I am still waiting on the other bushings.
New rear main seal kit. This kit was awesome. It came with a little installer plastic piece and all new hardware!
Installed
Got a new pilot bearing as preventative maintenance
Tried pulling the old one out but the tool I borrowed from advanced autoparts was terribly engineered and would have needed modification to get it out. I will have to check autozone to see if they carry a different brand tool that might be better...
Also got my new knock sensors in and installed. Ive always wanted new knock sensors
And then I got these. Sorry Josh, you dont need ASTs!
My pic:
Halston'spics:
Top mount rear ride height adjusters
Ill be running the 550/650r spring rates.

Vorshlag he said. Never seen them myself.
Has anyone ever steam cleaned the bottom of the car and in the wheel wells? I heard that you can rent them from home depot but that was incorrect. I looked them up online and found http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-a...w=1366&bih=665
But I am not sure if they will work..
Maybe a heavy duty pressure washer that heats the water? That might work well?
Awesome update.
Subbed.
Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.
Great work there with the elbow grease!
Lol hey Rob i was at the shop when you asked that question. I said get a steamer and steam the bottom of the car and wipe off with paper towels to avoid having to pressure wash in your garage. But finding a steamer is harder than i though.
They have this thing called a bottom feeder v2 i just read about. Roll the car outside and set it under it. Looks like it works well
just steamed mine with this bad boy landa hot water diesel pressure washer.
