Hi guys, I searched this forum and tried to find it in my manual with no luck. There were tons of threads for getting it back up though.
I have a 97 328i vert and the motor to raise lower the top is shot. I want to still be able to drive with the top down on occasion but I can't figure out how to manually retract it. I found I am supposed to use an Allen wrench but can't find where? Any help would be great.
FIRST FIRST FIRST -- Lower *all* the windows partway !!!
Allen key operates the motorized hooks that hold the top to the windshield
Some people use a cordless drill with Allen-key shaped bit to operate
this part of roof.
Once this is released, THEN, you ned to release the motors from the top
--- this is done by using lever under driver-side of rear seat.
Now you should be able to lower the roof itself.
How to get rear cover to unlock & open -and- later to close & lock
... I have no idea.

Where is the location to use the Allen key?
At the handle behind the rearview mirror. It's all explained in the owner's manual which everyone should have or not, get first. As most questions are answered right in there.

After releasing top from windshield and disconnecting motors, I can't get the tonneau cover to move. Help
You need to crank it a long time. Far past when the latches let go. The top will lift maybe 6" above the windshield before the top can be lowered. Then you need to lift the rear of the top so it is vertical. Then you can lift the tonneau cover. Then the entire top can be lowered into the storage area.
