the E31 workshop manual does not shown any pics at all and is very brief: page 11-53/1 states: removing and installing or replacing coolant thermostat: remove following parts: splash guard,coolant - drain and fill,fan, cover for thermostat, end of instructions, no pics at all.
The E32 workshop manual shows on page 11-53.7.1 3 pics in section M70 removing and installing coolant thermostat: drain coolant, unscrew bolts and take off thermostat housing (installation: tightening torque 10 Nm), install thermostat with ball valve facing up, install O-ring, fill and bleed cooling system . checking thermostat: check opening temperature in a hot water bath and compare with stamped opening temperature.
The pic shown clearly shows that first the t-stat goes in and then the o-ring, ETK is wrong.
