CEL came on 2 days ago. Took it to a very reputable mechanic for diagnosis. No codes were reported. Light is still on. I'm taking the car to another BMW mechanic next week for more research. Until then - any thoughts one what my problem could be?
Any indication what scanner they are using?

Stop by your local autoparts store and have them read codes.

I have a Creator 310+ scanner. Recently I've gotten a CEL and I'll scan engine codes and get nothing. Then when I go back a menu and scan transmission codes, I'll get a code "6F Converter Lockup Clutch/ Speed Monitoring". It gives me an option to clear transmission codes and that turns the dash light off. I have also had the gear with the exclamation point light come on, but I guess that's a separate transmission warning light?
Not sure if this applies as you have a manual M car and I have an auto 2.8 car.
The Mil is not a general failure light. It is part of the OBD2 emissions system. It will be on when there is an OBD2 code, and there will be an OBD2 code when there is a failure that will causes emissions to not pass standards. This is why an OBD2 scanner is a better choice when chasing a MIL.

Went to favorite BMW shop - turns out the code is for secondary air system. They're going to smoke it to locate the issue.
