I'm having same issue 2000 740i m sport burnt transmission rep laced with one I know runs from a 98 trying to find out if there is something incomparable with them bit all info I see is that all 5hp24s are same. Going to try reseting ecu waiting to get the software only code I could get was transmission self test.

Swap the valve body. I had the same issue when I put a new transmission in my car.

    STOP THE INSANITY!

I'm not sure how many times I've said this, but here goes one more time!

YOU CANNOT swap a trans from a car prior to 9/98 into a facelift car. Yes, they are both 5hp24, but the only thing that is the same is the core gear setup.

    late 96 to 9/98: Pre-facelift 5hp24
9/98 to end of production: facelift 5hp24 with upgraded 1st gear drum, valve body (different passages) and EGS module, including new wiring harness.
Sport 5hp24 from 9/98 to end of production in Sport models: facelift 5hp24 as above, plus Steptronic shifter, higher rpm torque converter, Sport EGS

No, you CANNOT swap valve bodies between the facelift and pre-facelift models.

Interestingly, you CAN install a facelift trans into an older car, but it may not shift properly, but will work satisfactorily for a while until the adverse shifts destroy a gear drum.

You CAN swap a Sport into a non-Sport facelift, but you must also swap to a Sport EGS. You do not need the Steptronic shifter, unless you really want to swap that in also, which then you'll need the Sport wiring harness too. You can also convert a non-Sport trans to a Sport by swapping to a Sport torque converter into it, and then swaping the EGS. Again, if you want a Steptronic swap too, you'll need the Sport wiring harness.

Simply, when replacing a trans, you have to stay within your year group; up to 9/98 or after 9/98, don't cross the streams...

Ok, it can be that an e38 5hp24(ZTB) won't work, seems so. But an older e39 5hp24(ZOL) will work with just the solenoid harness swap.

^Perfect, I saw this list a long time ago and was looking for it. Basically -016 is prefacelift, -021 is facelift, and -022 is Sport. The -021 and -022 are the same internal trans, but the torque converter and EGS gear ratios are different.

But I did swap valve bodies. I'm speaking from experience. I purchase a rebuilt 5hp30 transmission from a 1996 850. I put this transmission into my 2000 750il. I immediately got a transfailsafe. Car would stay in only one gear.. I took the valve body my original valve body and swap it into the the rebuilt transmission from the 850. IT WORKS! LOL . Imtrying to help people. I'm not putting out random ideas. Maybe in the 5hp24 it will not work the same. But for the 5hp30 it works.

I saw the tread where you had swapped harnesses and it worked. Would that work on the ztb?
