I'm trying to find the EWS module in my car but for some reason it's nowhere to be found.
It's not beneath the steering wheel and it's not behind the glove compartment. Under the steering wheel there is a ALF module which is for the steering wheel buttons. And behind the glove compartment there is a few other modules.
Anyone have any ideas?

Isn't that the one that sits next to the ignition on the dash side of the key?
You can see it next to the key here I believe.

No that's for the antenna ring. The EWS box is abit bigger. But I can't find it at all.
It's really important that I figure this out asap since I have to see if my DME is bad or not. Got another one that I want to test.
97 is under the panel under the steering wheel, but it's a different module than the 95 so can't guarantee it's in the same place.
Totally stock 97 740iL except for SatRad

driver side close to the radio should be it i just looked it up
Nope, nowhere to be found :S I think its a late 94 modell. Can check later.
If it has a build date sometime in 94...I wonder if it uses a starter immobilization relay like the e31/e34/e36 models that were built before 1/95?
If you can't find it in the normal places...I believe on one of these models e36/e34/e31...the relay was located in the A pillar/drivers' footwell area.

Hmm maybe, I have a DME from another car. But when I put it in I can't get it to start. So something have to be in the way, do you think the relay have the capabilites to do this? Or is there a way for me to work around it?
Still can't find it. The car was registered in 95, but I can't find any production date.
This is just weird.

What are the last 7 # from your vin?
Early 95's (late 94's) don't have EWS
Have a technical question, don't send me a PM but post it on the board so others can benefit from it!
In many countries...there's a MFG label on the driver's door jamb that contains the build date as well as the car's VIN (vehicle identification number).
Check your driver's door jamb to see if you have a BMW MFG label...which should also have the build date....or as Edwin mentioned...the last 7 digits of your VIN will reveal the build date when you enter it into the BMW ETK or the online part databases.
Here' in the USA & Canada...the BMW MFG label is located on the driver's door jamb along with another label that contains tire pressure info and wheel/tire sizes (see pic below)...the BMW MFG label is ABOVE the door latch & tire pressure label:
(Canadian BMW VIN label...note the 03/00 build date on the 2nd line of this e38 740i)
(USA BMW VIN label...note the 03/00 build date on the 2nd line of this e39 M5's MFG label)

The numbers are not there.
Dg37474 is the last 7 digits.
production date is 11/94

That doesn't help me much though =/ I still need to figure out where the EWS is or how I can change to another DME to see if my symptoms/problems disappear.
If it doesnt have EWS...
Take another DME module and hook it up. Should work just fine.
DMEs w/o EWS are 404 P/N versus 484

My dme has the code: 0 261 203 484 and so does the replacement DME I've got for the car. So if what you are saying is right the EWS should be there somewhere :S
Ive never seen a 484 DME NOT have EWS....
But you are in EU, and so I suppose it could be a possibility.
Did you try WDS to see if it would show you where it might be?

When using your car's VIN...the EWS control module does not appear when you do a search...which is probably why you can't find it. Like I was thinking...if your car is built BEFORE 1/95 (the debut of EWS II)...you don't have an EWS control module or the carrier that it resides in (see #1 & #2 in diagram below). And you probably have a starter immobilization relay...that's what you should be looking for.
Have you checked the WDS (it's online now) or Bentley to see if you can find the location of the starter immobilization relay?
This is one of the indicators when you search the part data base using your VIN...if the part nbr (below the diagram) does not list the item(s) in the diagram...then that part is not used in your car.
For an example...here's the diagram and part nbr index when I use your car's VIN versus my car's VIN (dm08064).
- Only items #3 & #4 appear in the part # index for your car: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...33&hg=61&fg=25
- Only item #1 appears in the part # index for my car: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...33&hg=61&fg=25
- And #1 also appears in the part # index for a generic 740i with a 1/95 build date: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...33&hg=61&fg=25

How would I bypass this?
Can I hook up the other antenna ring reciever and the ring, hold the other key against it and turn around my own key? Ooh this sounds complicated since I have to do a test run with the car aswell :S
If it does have EWS it's hard to bypass, check under the steering wheel to see if you have the module there

Edwin, it's not there. I can't find it, there is no box with EWS on it or steur something.
So, is there key ring antenna or not?
If not, then dont bother looking for EWS, if yes, check again behind the glove box.
Yellow or purple connector, could be metal or plastic module. Pull any module with the size of cigarette pack and read at the back.
I the worst case scenario, try to follow the wires from the key ring antenna.
Good luck

Hmm, obviously I don't have EWS at all. I thought I had an antenna ring but had to double check to be sure, and I was wrong. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing.
Will this be any complications for me when I try to recode the other brain which has EWS? It's the same part numbers etc, so it shouldn't be a problem right?
