Dear Lord: please let an enthusiast buy this poor Baur and rescue it from a certain fate of "bangerdom"!
Apparently, the definition of the oxymoronic phrase "custom factory top" is: "rear top incorporating tiny, lopsided window".
Sorry, guys; when I see stuff like this done to cars that I love, I lose all of my happy thoughts and my "nice guy" hat goes sailing clean out the window . . .

Ed,
You are indeed correct; in fact, I had your car in mind when I made my comment. Thanks for saving it from a bad end at the hands of some clod.
Does anyone know whatever became of that poor burgundy Baur Hartge which received the same "treatment" as the blue Baur? It would be nice to think that someone rescued it . . .

Howdy y'all - just bought a 1984 318i Baur. I cannot find the plate on the driver's side. I have the owner's manual that came with with Baur top. I'm confused as to why the plate is not there. Any help would be appreciated.
Ross
HI,
Welcome and congratulations on your new acquisition! Welcome to the Baur world!
The Baur plate should be located in the drivers door jamb on the engine side of the jamb (forward). If you scroll back through this thread you should find a pic of the location. In some cases where the car was repainted, someone may have removed it.
Here is the Baur plate location, I found this pic from post #568 in this thread.
Post your VIN here, and we may be able to trace it that way.
Welcome!

This forum loves pics, but you dont have enough posts to put any up yet. You need 10-20 posts, I think, to get the privilege.
You can wait for that, or, if you'd like, you can email them to me and I will post them for you.

I will put them up on my Baurspotting blog also
.
That is curious about the lack of a Baur plate. Hmmm. The build sheet may give us a clue... maybe several possibilities. We love a good mystery, also. btw!

I'll try to get some pics early this evening. I bought it from a retired Air Force NCO who bought it from an Air Force colonel. Supposedly the colonel had it built to US specs so he could bring it back to the US. It has the big bumpers. The top has the TC/BAUR markings so I'm confused about the missing plate.
Pooleman - thanks for the info.

Well I was wrong. I took a second look and there's 2 holes in the door jamb. Guess someone pried it off for some reason. Dissapointing.
I'll send Tom some pics in the next couple of days.
Looking forward to further discussions. Like why my third brake light won't work. HA
There you go BTW 1984 BMW E30s didn't have. 3rd brake lights.

I was curious about this since the wires were routed underneath the trunk lid and the light is mounted with what appears to be adhesive foam. At least they didn't drill through the trunk to mount it.
Paid $3K for this car so I think I got a pretty good deal. Drove it from San Antonio to Austin with no issues. Just needs a good home and someone to fix the little ankle-biters.
Do we know this Baur? LA area, was on Jalopnik in 2009.

Has the car been resprayed? If so, then the Baur plate may have been removed for painting and never re-attached. You may want to check with the previous owner.... perhaps he has it laying around somewhere, or it may even be laying on a shelf at the auto body shop where it was painted, perhaps.
Can't hurt to ask, you might get lucky.
I think there is a place (Germany maybe?) where you can buy a replacement Baur plate. I seem to recall seeing them offered on ebay or someplace a while back. Jeroen (Netherlands) may be able to get the original Baur number from the VIN.
Ross, I didn't mean to confuse things with that Baur pic that I posted from LA. I know that it isnt your car.... I was just asking in general if anyone here remembers seeing the Jalopnik article before.
I do look forward to seeing some pics of what you have, whenever you can get to it.

Nice car Ross,
Here is some information on the vehicle.
The in service date of the car is 4/5/1984
The retail center is #00923 ( Euro delivery )
at some point it was at a wholesale center in the state of MO. Or this is the orignial dealership wher the car was ordered from ( I need to clairify that information
There was a recall performed in San Antonio ( SIB #17-1-9-93v-015 ) coolant system . completed in 2004 No other recorded recalls or service history in the system

@ Ross:
That is a NICE Baur! I wish mine had your vinyl seats; Miss Opal's are cloth. They're OK, but they have faded to dark blue . . . and vinyl cleans-up easier.
@ everyone:
Please clarify, if someone can: was Ross's car one of the "official seven" exported to U.S. since it was pre-federalized? Or would we need to know the Baur number to determine that? Just curious . . .
We just returned from Euro-Classica in Winston-Salem, NC. Out of the sixty or so cars there, Miss Opal was the only Baur in attendance. As a result, she got quite a bit of attention.

Jeff, and the rest of the regulars ITT here are some things to think about.@ everyone:
Please clarify, if someone can: was Ross's car one of the "official seven" exported to U.S. since it was pre-federalized? Or would we need to know the Baur number to determine that? Just curious . . .
1. the Car is a US spec 318,
2. I can confirm that the it was ordered as an overseas delivery ( Euro )
3. Option code 829 is missing from the build sheet and option code 400 is there would lead us all to believe that the conversion would have been an after thought.
4. Jeroen hasn't found any info ( yet ) off the VIN .
I don't think we can come to a conclusion until our Guru finds some info on it
On another note @ Jeff I have Been working all weekend and I haven't had a chance to look for that headlamp switch I'll have some time in the morning to search for it I'll keep you posted.

I appreciate the comments on my TC2. It really is in pretty good condition. Someone added a third brake light which I dispatched this morning. It has an aftermarket radio as well which isn't surprising. The top is in good condition with 2 defects on the front corners, most likely damage from being reapeatedly slid in/out of the trunk brackets. I've already ordered some replacement cosmetic parts for the interior. I can't get it inspected until the license plate lights/lenses arrive. The old ones fell apart when I tried to replace the bulbs.
I leafed through the various manuals that came with the car. I have the Baur catalog and manual, the owners manual, and am waiting on the previous owner to send some maintenance records. I found an old insurance card in the glovebox. It belonged to the original owner who is apparently still in San Antonio. As stated before he is a USAF retired colonel. I hope to get in touch with him to see if he knows anything about the missing Baur plate.
I came across this car by accident. I had a '88 325i convertible sold out from under me a couple of days before I bought this. I'm pretty happy that the deal fell through and I found this Baur. I sure wasn't looking for one! I couldn't make it to San Antonio the day I saw the Craigslist ad but the owner held onto it for 4 days until I could make it to his house. All in all it was a great find and a very good deal.
Thanks again for all your help. I hope we can solve this mystery!
Ross
