Hi total noob here.
I keep reading that the timing belt and tensioner on an E30 should be replaced as soon as you get your hands on one.
Does the same apply to a 318i vert with an M42 and a timing chain instead of a belt?
Thanks,
vertbag
And also your hydraulic tensioner could start losing pressure and allow the chain to start rubbing inside the cover. If you start hearing a weird sound like something that is rubbing but raises and lowers rpm, as the engine does, put a new hydraulic tensioner in. It's very easy to do from the passenger side of the engine bay.
I had an m42 with over 250k miles in it when I bought it, 10 years ago. Your engine will last a very long time if you do the oil changes and normal maintenance on it.
