Seller was orig asking 1800 and I paid less than that!
As far as pricing, in my short buying effort over the last couple months Ive learned that baur pricing can be all over the place. I think part of is that people (like us) love the car for many reasons. On the other hand, it's not really a collector and you can find better equipped/newer BMW cabrios for less $ (i actually passed up on a MINT 92 vert with 94k miles and ALOT of recent necessary work done -- seller was only asking $5k). No dis intended but i wanted something i could park on the street and take my time fixing up. Also, lot depends where you/seller are located.
Jeff: my new baur has brown top.

I am curious about this plate: what is the "Bureau of Automotive Repair"?
Is that a California thing?

You are almost there Tom... just two more mate! Seems to me you got a smoking deal on your Baur. Even if you had to add $2K worth of work to it, you are still ahead at $3.8 - $4K for the car. The Blau Baur is nice and all that but with it still needing a little bit of work I don't know if it is $5K nice enough to be in the garage for me.
I think it was probably to do with it getting CA CARB certificates and the Federalization process here.
Seems like a very nice car... still not sure on the price.
1. With this post, I am now 9. One more to go.
2. I do want to vent re DAS shipping. I was told my baur (departing northern CA) would never leave the trailer and would be at my pickup terminal in VA on Friday night or Saturday morning. The trailer apparently skipped my terminal to continue up to NJ where it was unloaded. I called and they said it would leave NJ this morning for my terminal in VA, but it did not... Hopefully, the Newark air will not permeate the canvas top!!!
3. Anyone know the weight gain from baur top (vs a comparable 2 dr)? Should be lower than reg e30 convertible.
4. Aquila: I still have yet to see my baur in person, but yes I think i lucked out and owner was super nice/easy to deal with. I figure even with the cost of shipping ($735) and if major work is necessary, I still will not be breaking the bank. In any case, I plan to hold onto this one for many moons.
TomDC,
I'm really sorry to hear about your problems with the shipper. That was partly the reason that I decided to buy my car regionally and, as it turned out, I actually got lucky and found it less than 50 miles distant.
Old Bimmers in general always seem to be cheaper and more rust-free coming out of California, but I just couldn't handle the uncertainty of the sight-unseen-and-commercial-carrier dynamic. I probably overpaid by purchasing my car here in NC, but I can't say that I'm unhappy as a result; it really did seem to be fate which dropped it into my lap at just the right time and place. . . and we all know that one does not flout the generosity of the Bimmer gods.
Bronzit with a brown top and interior -- sounds nice. Perhaps you can bring it to The Vintage down here in Winston-Salem NC in May so that I can smoke it over.
As to the "weight-gain" issue: I'm not sure that additional weight would result from the conversion process. These cars had a steel roof (with a sunroof mechanism!) replaced by fiber and fabric, and a glass rear window replaced with plastic. Even the rear side windows were reduced in area, hence weight. It doesn't appear that the resulting exposed skeletal roof structure was significantly altered, so unless Baur did an awful lot of beefing-up in places that I haven't yet found I would have to say that they weight less, not more.
Think about this: don't most of the stock Baurs that you see seem to sit higher than other E30s -- mine included? That can't be accounted for due to 1" larger diameter (15") wheels alone. I think it is a result of removing quite a bit of sprung weight from a stock suspension -- either that, or they just built 'em all “taller” for the non-U.S. markets.
Tomscat or Jeroen, can you please confirm/dispel any part of this theory . . ?

Hi Guys,
Jeff is right, it isn't a weight gain, it's a weight loss. Of about 10 kg...I don't think you'd see that from the ride height. I think it is because most Baur's arent modified and they are mostly the old types, with euro bumpers. The chrome bumper-cars are already looking higher then the post 1987-cars and with the euro-bumpers, the cars are also not looking that long (not so stretched). Hmm, I hope you understand what I mean
Baur didn't make any further changes to the car. It is rigid from the frame only. At least, the TC1 and TC2 are. The TC4 lacks some rigidity, and therefore tends to have cracks in the top and at the C-pillar.
About the normal convertible; that was indeed 200kg heavier compared to a normal 2-door.
Gr Jeroen
Thanks, Jeroen.
I hadn't thought about the possibility that the U.S. cars were actually built lower than those sold elsewhere due to Federally-mandated bumper height standards which exist in this country.
And you are right: U.S. E30s did look longer, hence perhaps lower, due to their extended aluminum bumpers.

Kudos to robrez for finding and posting this link! Wow, what a find!
very rare E30 BAUR rescue roof retrofit. almost complete
ok, so i was wandering around the jy yesterday and came across a Baur e30 that some thoughtless tool turned in. as you know this kind of place will never sell you a complete car. it really makes me upset to see such a rare vehicle wind up in the crusher. Originally i pulled off the roof panel and a few pieces of proprietary hardware. last night i started thinking about this car kind of like the way my girlfriend looks at those dog rescue shelters. kinda want to save them all. anyway, i went back today and removed the entire roof area so it can be grafted onto another e30 coupe. as you can see by my sig, I have too many projects right now. if this doesn't sell, i was thinking down the road to fabricate it onto one of my ix's. as a result, i am not willing to separate any parts. all or nothing. i just want it to go to a good home where it is going to be put on a car and adored by its owner.
i know that not everyone finds a baur aesthetically pleasing, but they are awesome and they are very rare. not as pretty as an m3, but definitely much harder to come by. i could see this sort of project as something levent's shop might do. this top came off an 84 euro, but the good thing is that it can be made to fit any e30 coupe.
the setup is mostly complete. it is just missing two items: the driver's side quarter window was broken when i got to the car. also, the passenger side quarter window trim is missing. you will be able to see these defects in the photos below. i know of two e30 parts baur's a few hours west of here. i don't know if the guy is willing to sell parts off them, but at least it would be a start.
here comes the pix:
as you can see, all of the vinyl is really in excellent condition. it is dirty in the pix, but there are no rips, tears, or abrasions that i can see.
here is the vin if anyone with a carfax subscription feels like checking the history and posting it here. last digit is a 3.
Much, much more on the thread!
Thank you, robrez and thank you flyboyx! from the r3vlimited board!
I have also posted this on my blog, with credit to both of you guys for helping us learn about this!

"SIGNATURE MODEL S320A elimination"
"S350A WAERMESCHUTZGLAS GREEN, ROUND" (green-tinted glass all around?)
"S495A FOND SPACE HEATING" (air conditioning?)

"S915A only conserves soil"

1987 325e Sedan A/T Zinnoberrot (Dawn's)

Hi Jeff;
"type LIM" The type of body: Limousine (2/4-door; BMW didn't notice if it was a Baur or not)
"power 0" The power of the engine.
"drive HECK" Heck=rear -> Rearwheeldrive
"SIGNATURE MODEL S320A elimination" No signature on the rear
"S350A WAERMESCHUTZGLAS GREEN, ROUND" (green-tinted glass all around?) Yep, green glass all around. Other options where 351 (Brown all around), 358 (Green exept for the windscreen) and 359 (Brown exept...). Together with option 350 it was possible to have option 354: Green windscreen with extra green for the 10cm on top (sunvisor)
"S495A FOND SPACE HEATING" (air conditioning?) No, not aircon, that was option 530. 495 is a part that was standard of 4-door saloons and an option on 2-doors. It is connected to the normal blower and is a sort of pipeline going under your carpet with openings near the rear-passengers feet.
And most baffling of all:
"S915A only conserves soil" That was an option that leaves away any rustprotection on the body. This was a no cost option (just like 320 Signature deletion). All Baur's have this one, because otherwise they had to clean the car from rustprotection before they could weld on the Baur-frame.
Gr Jeroen
Thanks so much for the clarification, Jeroen. All of this info has been very helpful to me and has answered some long-pondered questions.
It is hard for the American mind to grasp the concept of a small coupe as a "limousine", as over here limousines are typically stretched-wheelbase big cars or (recently) trucks.
"Power 0" -- they didn't have a very high opinion of their 2.0 six's capabilities, now did they? Or am I mistaking the letter "O" for a zero? Seriously, this was an option code . . . yes?
My car indeed had no "320i" badge on the deck lid when I bought it . . . but, since I didn't know whether it had simply been removed for repainting, I decided to "un-delete" it. It now proudly wears its correct model designation purchased through GutenParts and installed using the factory template which another BFer graciously supplied to me.
Regarding the "S495A FOND SPACE HEATING": I was impressed when I discovered that both of our BMWs had this feature. The concept has been around a lot longer than the 1980s, however; we once owned a 1963 Buick LeSabre which had the rear-seat-heating ductwork run beneath the front seat. We learned that General Motors installed it as standard equipment on every big Buick they built in that year.

Hi guys,
Well, I finally picked up my Baur and drove home from Manassas, VA -- about 45 mins. Since it was 50+ degrees and sunny here in DC, I put down the soft top!
It is Baur no. 40277-15 and the car vin no is WBAAA7101D9146401. I think I mentioned already but it's 1983 323i (bronzit with brown tops). I believe it was imported by an individual -- Stephen McClelland or something like that -- name is on a plate in door sill.
Car runs well and pretty much everything is in working order. However, I can already see many parts that need replacement (some Baur and some general stuff). No major rust but there is some that should be dealt with soon.
As soon as I learn to post pics in these messages, I will.
Tom
Congratulations, TomDC, and let me be the first to officially welcome you back to the Baur World!
Is it registered with the International Baur Registry yet? I havent had a chance to look myself, and gotta run here... but wanted to congratulate you on your purchase!
We are all ready for some pics!!
And your first Baur Run started from Bull Run! "There is Jackson, standing like a stonewall."
Hell, I checked anyway!

Congrats from me , too, TomDC! In for pix as well. Sounds as though you had a great drive home from Manassas -- and yes, I know right where that is. I was born nearby in Fairfax Co., back when it and Prince William Co. were still relatively rural. I finally moved out to Loudoun around '85, and then left the area for good in '88.
Do be certain to place your new acquisition on the Baur TC2 Registry, and be patient if Markus dosn't get it listed online immediately. Also, Markus occasionally sends out e-mail missives to those of us who are Baur Registry members. They will be printed in German, but translate.google.com will allow you to get the gist of them very quickly.

Thanks Tom! I'm still trying to figure out how to post photos -- I think I have to minimize the file size...
Until I do, I notice I have a Baur parts "issue". Jeroen, would you happen to know the answer to this:
I have the "old" e30 Baur tc2 hardtop system (using 2 pins). Is it true the Baur retrofit plate (changing from the two pins to two receptable holes) is no longer available? According to the Baur parts diagram on Tomscat's blog, the plate (with two holes) which is the main part of retrofitting is "discontinued".
Basically, my problem is the two receptacles (spring locks) for the two pins are broken. So, I either must retofit to the second tc2 system or find two more receptables...
(i will try to post photos of this so you can see what I'm talking about)
