    DIY rebuild your 4HP24 thread

Just a few informations that may come handy for anyone that wants to rebuild transmission.

    1. Case: Torque converter error and uncomfortable driving

    2. Solution: Send Your torque converter to specialised workshop to replace lockup clutches inside the torque converter

    3. You dont have to disassemble Your gearbox as i did, but if You do so, there are much good documentation. First of all photos from the happy Polish 850 workshop

Good to have rebuild kit like seals, gaskets and clutches. They should be for ex 280$ on ebay. In my case, i had signs of wear on part 9 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...32&hg=24&fg=15 and part 1 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...91&hg=24&fg=15

    Documentation:
    http://www.wuffer.ca/MyFiles/ZFOilRef.pdf
    http://www.wuffer.ca/MyFiles/RepairManual1994.pdf page 289
    http://www.europeantransmissions.com....BMW/00-01.pdf

    http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/...luid_Chart.pdf
    http://www.automaticchoice.com/Catalogue/zf4hp24.pdf

And the most important one is the main board documentation below. If opening it there will be many many little parts with very little diffrences You cannot see with bare eye.

Specialised workshops will mostly just take Your money and only fix Your clutches. Better to do it Yourself or ask a friend like i did.

One technical question; do you use the regular wash cycle or the pot-scrubber cycle?

Thanks for the great tech links; pretty soon everyone will be doing their own trannies....
How come the middle half of any project always takes the most time?

My gearbox has been rebuilt a few months ago ,due a mixture of coolant and gearbox oil caused by a cranky radiator ( torque converter and clutch, internal clutches, and some other stuff ), and i do agree... it is not a cheap fix...

Thank you very much !!!! Very valuable info.

    Torque Converter after regeneration (refurbished).
List of things that got fixed on the protocol:
    -lockup
-lockup clutch (i wonder how many people knew that there are also clutches inside converter?)
    -bearings
    -sealings

Part nr 1 from the schema on some posts before. New one in the background.
You can see the damage on tooths

For now, i would like to remain silence I will follow-up first day after it has been tested to work. Its a project-only until test drive I'm so lucky that if i would write right now what has been modded, the tranny would catapult just after i put "D" for sure And that would be too funny

Whoever wants schematic for any other transmission, also for other cars not only BMW, may use this link
    http://www.automaticchoice.com/catalogu.html
Normally you need a password to access to this site but then it just redirects You. Have fun.

Also, there is a very interesting device named Compushift.

The Compushift is a 'stand alone' ECU that controls the electronic version of the 4HP22/24.
Ever wanted to swap to manual or have paddles?

Also, the pricing seems pretty high. 1000USD on the hgm site is not true. They want more for elements for ZF. My quote was
795gbp device, 145gbp XY switch and 24gbp selector shaft.

Hello everyone, my name is Leonardo, I owned a 1992 bmw 850I with automatic transmission (it has 70,000 km or around 40,000 miles). A friend of mine scanned the car for me, it showed TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH trouble code 63. In addition to this, on the obc shows programa emergencia cambio which translates to emergency program changed (I think it is some kind of LIMP MODE). When this appears the car wont accelerate, the symbol on the cluster for the gear selector dissapears. Do you think I need to change the torque converter clutch? If someone can give me some information or advice I will really appreciated. Thank you.

It will not be the TC. I assume the reason you get the trans program there in the check control, that comes automatically when something is wrong and also comes as a safety measure and therefore the system goes into limpmode.
You problem is probably an electronic problem, not the torque converter clutch. First of all make sure that the gear is shown in the cluster, that is very important.
Here some info what could be the cause

How about the EML light? Does it come on and then disappear after 2-3 seconds?

    Good Evening ogorek,
    The rebuild looks great!
I am presently working with my ZF. Please advise what chemical used to remove the oxidation and refinish the exterior.

    Appreciate the support.
