You can find instructions in the online BMW TIS: http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/

Click the link above and when you get to the website, click on the appropriate links for you car. The rear tail lights will be under LIGHTs...continue to click the links that will take you all the way over until you get to the TIS document for replacing the rear light cluster or assembly.
    Good luck.

Sure...but how do I know that you're not the teenage son of the car's owner and you've got plans to take the bimmer out tonight when the old man goes to sleep. Hmmm.

BTW, I'll have to email you because you don't have enough posts for personal messages.

    Check your email...instructions were sent.

thanks man, the old man wont know i was gone now hehe
    jokes lol
bought the car a couple days ago and was messing around with it... that alarm is so effing loud.
your steps worked perfectly with one stipulation, i had to put the key in ignition 2 in order to see the timer countdown
i have a 1999 740IL, and thanks to you i know a little bit more about her =D
thanks man i really appreciate it
also, seeing as how i cant post or do anything yet i was wondering about the radio code and where i enter that
my radio doesnt work but it turns on just nothing is transmitted
is it a fuse? or the radio code?
if its the radio code where do i input the code into
i have the card that has a 4 digit code on it for the radio

Sorry about the ignition position...I'm glad you figured it out.

The "radio" doesn't have a "code" like the old BMW anti-theft radios. BMW went with a multiple component/model specific set-up when they rolled out the e38/e39/e46 models and dropped the old style anti-theft radios w/CODE. The radio is either incorporated into the in-dash cassette or CD player and is controlled by the MID (multi-informational display)...and if you have onBoard Nav...the radio is in a separate unit back in the trunk near the CD changer & Nav CPU. The MID from the 3/5/7 are all different so you can't install those units into any of the other models...as well as the in-dash cassettes or single CD units.

There's probably something else wrong...perhaps your AMP has taken a dump.

(also, in the future, you should really start your own thread...what we're doing here is referred to as a "thread hi-jack". Plus the subject is hidden from others that may be having the same issue and could benefit from the discourse...and it is also adding posts that are not topic specific for the original poster.)

    Better late than never,
qsilver you were 100% right about the amp lol.
It turns out it was just not plugged in, the previous owner must have been screwing around with it.
