Cool, to see this posted here. Lots of good info. I remember helping to write this FAQ about 10 years back. Those were the glory days for R.A.C

My thumbnail pic is a custom fiberglass enclosure I built into the spare tire well in the back of my '99 740i sport. I am finishing the detail and carpeting this week. My spare tire well gave me a little over 3 cubic feet of air space....

    Work in progress...

I have a 1981 733i. How do I remove the stereo? I just got a new one and I want to install it.

    Yes it's completely stock.

Thanks for this incredible writeup, this will definitely be MORE than helpful for a ton of audiophiles, I wish there was some way I could give you rep points for this, good job.

    are slow.
My car made a wining sound relative to my engine RPM.. it ended up being the RCA wires connecting to the amp touching each other (solid gold ends with no rubber insulation). I wrapped the ends of them in electrical tape, and BAM, crystal clear

I accept with informationC' is for "direct current", which is a type of circuit. In a DC
circuit, all of the current always flows in one direction, and so it is
important to understand which points are at a high potential and which
points are at a low potential. For example, cars are typically 12VDC
(twelve volts direct current) systems, and it is important to keep
track of which wires in a circuit are attached to the +12V (positive
twelve volts) lead of the battery, and which wires are attached to the
ground (or "negative") lead of the battery. In reality, car batteries
tend to have a potential difference of slightly higher than 12V, and
the charging system can produce upwards of 14.5V when the engine is
    running.

    just your car.
Also I noticed that the write-up said that .6 % THD may be noticeable. You can BARELY hear 3% on a test tone, let alone real music. 6% is usually most noticeable. When you typically hear distortion it is in the 12-20% range.

    2002 330i
Hi I am totally new to this and not sure if i'm posting this question in the right area. But anyway, I have a 2002 330i and all i want is to have an AUX plug in so I can play music from my iPhone. what would be the cheapest and most efficient way to do this? Getting a different tape deck that fits the same way as the current one but has an aux plug in? Please get back to me its much appreciated.
