stuck tailgate, how do I open

The tailgate on my 99 540it will not open, it almost opens but then relatches, how do I get it open?

there is a pull cord behind your tool kit to pop the tailgate open .Its located on the inner tailgate panel passenger side .

I have figured out that the pull cord end is missing. There is just a hole where the plastic cord end should be.

I am hoping the problem is the #53 fuse. Reprogramming the key did not work, and the hatch seem to be only trying to soft close then release without actually unlatching.

Update: I pulled a spare 7.5 amp from the spare location in above the glove compartment. It fixed the remote lock issue after reprogramming.

I dug around the hole where the emgergency release should have been and could feel the plastic tab. With some patience, I worked it and got it out. I released the gate and reset the locking mechanism. Now releases and soft closes properly.

All fixed.
