    Question Repair E30 Hirschmann Antenna?

Anyone ever disassmble and revive a Hirschmann antenna?

All searches opt to replace, but if you have a working mast and motor, anyone ever troubleshoot one? I have a new smooth working mast and have confirmed my motor is happy to retract when the radio is turned off, however it won't turn on to raise the antenna.

I took the Hirschmann apart to see if was gummed up or frozen. All parts were not frozen. As mentioned the motor will work doing down when the radio is switch off, I'm wondering how the antenna switches direction to go up.

I cleaned and lubed the assembly and now it retracts faster and smoother but, still does not reverse. Anyone have a wiring diagram for the antenna or have tested or fixed one of these?

I can put a fixed or universal antenna in, but I figured I'd take a shot at repairing one. I have a few I can trade parts with. Speaking of parts, anyone know if there is a source for internal Hirschmann parts for these 20 year old antennas? I figure it kind of like fixing our instrument clusters.

    Thanks!

Found a repair kit and a retailer that sells replacement parts, I'll see what he has and the pricing on the gears and control board.

Also find a related repair write up on the Mercedes version which is almost identical to the e30 unit I took apart today.

I'm determined to repair 2 of the four antennas I have. (3 E30 and at least 1 E28)

    No fixed antenna for me...

Found the Hirschmann repair kit on ebay.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-P...item2310bf033e

From reading the benz threads, I have the symptom his thread addresses.

Picked one up and Hirschmann grease for the internals. $28.92 shipped.

It'll be nice if this is the culprit/cause. I figure this will apply to one of the four broken antennas.

so I took mine apart last night actually... my issue is the antenna was putting a huge drain on the battery even when the motor was not running. My unit was full of dirt but still seems to work. I'm still testing the current draw. My question is... for my unit, when the motor puts the antenna down and you disconnect the battery and then reconnect the battery, the motor will run again to put the antenna down - even though it's already down.... is this normal? i think it's what broke the plastic mast on mine.

    Nice Vert!

So from reading the Benz thread, there are two gears back to back in the antenna mechanism. One is driven by a worm gear/motor and the other drives the toothed antenna. Between the two gears is a tension spring and a plastic tab on the inside of each gear. The tension spring is held by the plastic tab.

The problem is that the plastic tab breaks, so the motor dosen't know when the cable has reached it's stop point and keeps running.

Later, I will dissemble my semi working one and validate if I have a broken tabbed gear, then check my other motors to see if I have one that is intact.

If the antenna gods are in my favor, I'll have a working antenna later this afternoon.

Closest I've come is changing a broken mast with toothed plastic cable on the son's 90 vert. I remember opening the case and manually moving a pulley with a belt on it (downwards to raise the mast, upwards to retract). That was good enough to fix it more than 2 years ago.

    Good luck with your quest,

Thanks Ron! It's a shame to discard these antenna's if they can be fixed with a $25.00 parts kit.

BTW, I did read something interesting in that the OEM Hirschmann antennas have a wire that runs the length of the nylon shaft and attached to the tip that is suppose to increase the reception abilities over the aftermarket replacements. (No extra wire)

I'll DIY this when I get a confirmed fix.

87iSee-i'd like to know if you find the source of the battery drain and if it can be solved. as you know from my original tread i have the exact same problem.my antenna works properly but when i was checking the amp draw @ the battery when reconnecting the neg lead the antenna would activate up and stay up- then remove neg lead and reconnect would send the mast down. not normal.
    thanks

I read that the fine wire inside only attaches to the top two sections

Honestly, I just bought a universal collapsible. I found an adapter from an audio install dealer to patch it into the existing antenna wiring. I'd have to check at home which adapter that was.

i just deleted the antenna.... put a hidden one in the dash. I have been using the same one on my 92 sonoma when i replaced the fenders. I didnt want to drill a hole in one for the antenna. Works great.
