What about if you don't want to remove the tires?

Im in the middle of refinishing a set of style 32's. I used the Aircraft stripper in the gallon jug, that you apply with a paint brush. Works amazing.

This is what they looked like, they had a very thick layer of gunmetal paint.

This was after 2 coats without scrubbing or using a scraper. Before I jumped to a scraper I was using a "low power" power washer. The scraper helped get the stubborn stuff off, but the power washer wasnt bad.

Look at the bottom left wheel, it went straight down to metal while using a scraper.

I just primed them and will be wet sanding them with 1000 and 2000 grit. After which I will be painting them and sanding them with 2000 grit and then 2 layers of clear coat.

Highly recommend removing tires, especially if you are going to use aircraft stripper as it says it could damage rubber.

ditto, I refinished a set 2 years ago. They had been previously refinished but poorly prepped and the silver/clear was peeling off in sheets. Whoever did it used a nearly impossible to remove epoxy primer (or perhaps it was factory?). I used stripper to get the old top coat off. I spot-filled a couple places where my scraper dug into the epoxy. Then used an etching primer followed by sanding primer in a few iterative stages & finally applied silver & clear. It helped to knock down the metal flake slightly with some scotchbrite prior to shooting the clear. I'm pleased with the results and they have held up well:

that final primer im willing to bet is factory, it is damn near impossible to remove. Some how though it came off easily on 1 of my wheels.

What color silver paint did you go with ?

I used Dupli-Color HWP101 Silver and HWP103 Clear. Many people feel the Wurth silver is a closer match to the factory BMW silver. Be sure to read the instructions for multiple coats. Many ketone & toluene based aerosols will attack the underlayer and cause it to crinkle. The Dupli-Color has a maximum 1 hour between coats, perhaps less in hotter climates. Otherwise you have to wait 7 days for it to fully dry before applying another coat.

:/ Im going to have to stick with rustoleum since i used their primer. Ive heard horror stories about mixing primers, paints, and clear.

A buddy bought a soda blaster from HF. Worked great on his oil pan and other aluminum engine components. Left almost a polished finish.
