It will probably be tricky, do you know if the wheels were sanded or not before they were sprayed? Acetone, mineral spirits or lacquer thinner would pull the paint off without immediately damaging the original paint, but it would take a really long time on those wheels

I don't know of any way that is safe but I do know a quick way

buy some aircraft stripper/aluminum stripper from autozone or Kragen/O'Reilly. It's basicaly acid in an aerosol can. You spray a coat on and watch the paint bubble up and seperate from the aluminum then just scrap the loose paint off.

Do not breath or have this stuff contact any part of your skin. Even if a little speck of it lands on your arm you will feel it burning immediately. Water neutralizes it. It's also known to cause cancer(says in the back). But its pretty damn good at rippin through paint!

Better to remove the paint with the suggest paint stripper, you never know if the PO did a good job on the paintjob before you and if he didn't the new paint going onto it is gonna be as bad as that, if it's starting to fall off at some time or cracking up. I know.. i've seen it!

Aircraft stripper is the $hit! I use it often. Only other ideal way would be to have them bead blasted.

If it's a difficult wheel then media blasting or professional stripping is your best bet.
By the time you are done with stripper and F'ing around until your fingers bleed you'll still be out $25 or better in materials.
It cost me $20 a pop(blasting) last time.

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue

I haven't tried the aircraft brand, but I've use Jasco aresol stripper, which is the best I've tried. It will take spray paint off in a heartbeat, but is almost completely innefective against factory wheel paint (style 5 specifically). It will take the clear off the rims with enough applications, but not the center paint. I finally had the sandblasted, which left a rough finish because it takes a very aggressive sand to remove that tough paint. Next time I would just paint over it. You can't get it off, it's definitely not going to fall off.

Would this stripper just take the spray paint off and not damn the alloys themselves?

+1.. and don't forget the time you spend doing this.

And if you can find someone local to powder coat them also, then you don't have to worry about paint supplies, and assuring the paint will last.

The stripper doesn't do anything to the aluminum at all. It's perfectly safe.

I had spray painted my rims as a theft deterrent after my original rims were stolen last December. Stupid move! At them time, I had no intention of selling my car, a 2008 Honda Accord. Now I am trying to sell it. I learned today that simple adhesive remover will remove the paint. Other possibilities are paint thinner and graffiti remover. Try those first before resorting to the stronger stuff. The paint may not be as difficult to remove as you think.

We have a stripper that charges $25 a wheel to soda wash the wheels. Not abrasive like sand blasting. The wheel comes out ready for polish and paint without the pits that sand blasting can cause. Media blasting with something like walnut shells is much better than sand if you want to go with blasting them.

So, she's a stripper and she refinishes wheels? Sounds like my kind of gal.

LOL, I would post a picture but would most likely be breaking forum rules. Sorry guys.
