Thanks Wanganstyle and Orangehatter. It is the diamond imprinted thrust washer/lug washer. I'll pm you my address and also ask for your paypal account so I can pay you for it. I put together my spare diff and put it in and ran it last weekend. So far so good. This is for the diff I took out which I am going to refresh as well and noticed that piece is kinda chewed up.
In my small amount of homework looking into re-gearing on my e28, I found the following helpful when it came down to finding discontinued parts:
I discovered that both BMW and Porsche had ZF making their LSD carriers. As such, some of the earlier Porsche LSD carriers were similar to BMW carriers. As you can see from the link below, the Porsche internals are very similar to the BMW parts and are still available for purchase. (also note the 4 clutch setup on the Porsche).

how much backlash should there be and how can i adjust the backlash? I recently assembled an LSD for my e28 and it seems to be a HUGE amount of backlash. I've shimmed either direction but nothing really helps.
here's a vid I took. thanks in advance.

No matter where you go, there you are...
Acceptable backlash is 0.0024 in to 0.0055 in. You need to measure backlash from the teeth of the ring gear using a dial indicator with the base of it attached to the case of the differential. To change the backlash, you shim left or right. If you have the right preload on the carrier bearings, you have to keep the total shimming the same. Whatever you subtract from one side, you must add to the other or vice versa. As much backlash as you have there, you need to use a thinner shim on the driver's side of the differential and a thicker shim on the passenger side. Essentially what that does is moves the ring gear teeth in tighter against the pinion teeth to reduce the backlash.
If you have any other questions, feel free to consult the link in my signature or PM me.
this diff is nice!

info on the small case diffs. Dan, from diffsonline says he has them and he needs the inner and outer diameters, as there are two sizes.
Jim Blanton says the inners are the sames size and spline count, so machining on a lathe can bring them down to size. guess i'd have to look inside.

What torque did you tighten the 8 internal hex bolts to for the carrier housing cover?
Differential has well over 15k miles now with zero issues, and also made a 2k mile run from OH to AZ.
Im going in the other direction on my gear ratio I want a 2.93 lds and thought I would just swap my ringrear onto a lsd section from a 3.15 lds turns out the ringgears or the center lds section are different. Im thinking the open diff ringgears are different from the lsd ringgear. can anyone shed some light on this. I think I need a ring and pinion from a e30 2.93 lsd. Sorry I dug up this old thread for my question it seem the best place. From what I can tell the cases are the same from open dif to lds S case. If the offset of the pinion was the difference on the cases I would be good and just swap the pinion and ringgear into the S case I have.

just FYI (oem bmw motorsports 4 clutch disc 1.5 way LSD units have those bolts glued with red locktite)
sounds frustrating!
for the 188mm e30/32/34/36 interchange diffs/gearings low numerical ratios (2.65-3.07) use one offset of LSD OR open differential capsule geometry.
3.15-4.88+ numbers use a different geometry
i.e. you have a e34 530i-5 with 3.07 final drive+ open differential and want to have a LSD and keep your original 3.07 gearing set.....what to do???
-->
install and set properly a low ratio lsd capsule from 2.79/2.93 e30 or early e36 328i 2.93 lsd. the cases, bearings, LSD capsules with matching gearing are direct interchange.
***e39/46 units are NOT compatible with the older gears, they are modern and more compact geometry ***
this is the top cap of the high vs low to show the difference in bearing geometry (to match thicker or thinner ring gear).
the 2.65, 2.79, 2.93, 3.07 ratios all use a thicker ring gear than the 3.15/3.23/3.38/3.46/3.64/3.91/4.10/4.27++

Bumping this up to get some info. I want to add another clutch pack to my diff to make it ~40% and that would mean I need another "dog ear" plate. Has anyone found a source for those for 188mm diffs (M3 diff, and a Z3 med case diff)?
There was the link to the Porsche diff part source, http://www.einmaligparts.com/Differe...0_c_11895.html
has anyone had any luck with these?
Thank you.
Here is an older thread that says the Porsche 944 clutches (and I suppose dog ears too) will work http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=584168 ... haven't yet confirmed it with anyone though.

Did i understood correctly. These shims moves complete carrier left/right in relative to pinion ring, hence backlash could be adjusted?
And pinion ring/bearings/collapse ring - it does not relate to above, and there is only one proper (mean with proper pretension on input side) way to install pinion part?
So..carrier needs to be adjusted to pinion, pinion position should be fixed in acceptable pretension range and shouldn't be adjusted at all. DO i think correctly?

Hi i just wanted to ask if any one can help me with my car. I just recently bought a e36 1992 bmw 316i but the engine and gears have been swapped with toyota 2jz 3000 CC. the problem which i am facing is that my cars differential is making noise and i wanted to know can i swap my cars diff with a 325 or 328's diff. your suggestions would be must appreciated
I would suspect a 316i uses a smaller case dif like the 318i here does. (pretty sure its smaller, Son has a '94 318is) If that's the case, you need to find one from another 4 cylinder Bimmer in the E36 range. Looking at the cases can tell you really quick. (and 'is's had a LSD option.) a good online resource is realoem.com google them and bring up the parts for your car, and compare to others.

im in middle of doing this right now, but im having a hard time getting the current 3.91 ring off the carrier to replace it with a 3.25. already did the 5speed swap a few months ago, now i just gotta wrap up the diff and she'll be a monster
lucky s.o.b. thats what im gonna end up doing to mine...2jz swap

Was doing this today and would say that a good compressor and a decent impact wrench really help. My setup is just ok, and I had to wait for the compressor to refill pretty much for each bolt in order to get the maximum zip. In between waiting, I would heat each bolt with a MAPP torch to try and loosen up the existing loctite. Others I did recently have come off much more easily, so who knows.
orangehatter,
I see you listed the price for 10 ring gear bolts as $24.30. However, pelicanparts has those listed at $5.50 each for p/n 33-12-1-205-561. Where did you get that good of a price?
Also for the frictions for the LSD: pelican's got the porsche parts for $45 each, but where'd you source yours for $8 cheaper? Are the ones you used OEM BMW, or through the porsche part number? BTW, the porsche/ZF parts I've seen are 95133255100 for the frictions, and 91733255211 for the dog-ear wear plates. Will these work as replacements, or do I need the OEM BMW parts?
If you can only use the BMW parts, what's the part number for the new frictions that you used?
Lastly, what's the source for the shim kit aat that price?
(Apologies if you put this somewhere and I missed it)
The OE BMW friction discs are PN 33141210626. They are around $38 at getbmwparts.com.
The Porsche PN 95133255100 are 2.5mm friction discs, so if you just swap them in with 2.0mm dog ear plates, the LSD preload will increase. I would not just drop these in willy nilly. The Porsche 2.0mm dog ears are direct drop in replacements.
I was replacing the friction discs in a 3.73 as the diff was pretty worn. In taking them out, I measured them and they come out at 1.91mm. I am not sure if that is due to wear or if that is around what they were when fresh. They look pretty glazed, so I am guessing when new they were 2.0 mm.
My question is, for 188 medium case diffs, are there different friction discs that are appropriate? For example, here I see them listed as a different part number: 33141203806 http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/p...141203806.html
The discs I have are the same part number as referenced in this thread: 33141210626
Maybe they are interchangeable?
May be doing this soon, so i would like some clarification. The porche/zf parta will work but creates a higher lockup. Is there no real modification required? I would like a higher lockup, but not like a spool. I have never rebuilt one of these before so any help is appreciated.
