Ha yes that is 100% correct. Most don't even know this. As this is no regular verhicle there is no wiring diagram.
But unlike the E38/E32 etc PDC switch, the E36 PDC switch is nothing but a simple on/off switch.
So my guess is (and the way I hooked it up) is simply in the reverse wire +12v (for retrofitted kits) or in the reverse light switch wiring (which is also the blue/yellow +12V wire going to the rear lights).
So just wire it into that circuit and be done with.
It's a really cool switch and I was surprised the backlight is actually red, not amber and where the O is red as well, but the I is amber.
It nicely matches the red light of the M shift knob.

Not sure what you mean? The slipring? I already have E36/Z3 M wheel, with E38/E39 MFL buttons installed (so to keep the smaller wheel) with E38/E39 7-wire slipring.
Since all my wires are taken, there are no more pins left to to shifter paddles. With the heated wheel slipring, I will have the two extra contacts needed. (although this is low priority, as I don't mind moving the shifter).

And yes, it's 380mm vs 375mm (the later padded E38 wheel is 385mm) which doesn't sound like much, but every mm counts.

What happens if I have r04 board that has no spot for that extra resistor? This came out of the car with both, front and rear PDC.
Thank you

Good job ..
very nice job!
is pdc activated automatically when you put reverse gear in or just after push the pdc switch?
in the wiringdiagram .. pinout 10 to ibus will be not connected? where do the pdc module get signal from reversegear(brakelights)?
thx
Very cool stuff.

If you are using the E38 PDC module you have to send an IBUS strings for activate and deactive the PDC. This string is comning normally via the LCM module.
So the deal would be to use an Atmel as usual like the MFL and SH modules, than monitor the analog gear switch inside the E36 with a GPIO, you have to do the same for the PDC switch to override the gear on/off command. Also one mor GPIO for the LED inside the PDC Switch to show the PDCs state. The rest is software for the Atmel, nothing more. I planned it for 2015 but I had to do other prior projects. It is always the same the time.
I will give it a try at the beginning of 2017, all the stuff is here, sensors, the E38 PDC module and cable harnesses.
I want it too in my E36, the PDC is a helpful feature.

EWBR

Hello mate! Pin 6 black, In what pin does it goes in pdc module? Thank you

Hello my friends, I'm looking for help . Where do I connect wire that goes from original e36 pdc switch pin 6, to PDC module? Thank you
How come i have PDC $508 in VIN, but only rear PDC sensors and not front? I am also missing PDC switch button
pin 6 from switch, where it goes in pdc module? Thank you

Hi there,
i'm not able to get it work :/
i have an complete e38 pdc system - sensors, control unit 66.21-8 352 279, 2 gongs (big and small) and one pdc switch (like the asc switch).
i've wired it like:
purple plug to yellow connector on the control unit
black connector:
#10 -> ibus ?
if i put #18 to ground on battery the gong starts to peep permanent (pdc sensors are free, so there is nothing in their way)
does anyone have a tip?
would be great if someone can help me :/
thanks in advance!

The E38 PDC module has a IBUS communication with the light control modul. If you set the rear lever the LCM sends a IBUS string over the bus and the PDC is waking up. Because of the IBUS specs communication protocol has to be in perfect timing with the right checksum parameters at the end too.
Easy solution is not possible, you will need a ATMEL IBUS solution, I made it for the E46 MFL in my E36, but I am still overhelmed with work. I have all the E38 PDC stuff here for my B3 convertible, want build it too. Time is the problem not the knowledge...

Must be the later 3-pin active sensor system. The early system with same style passive sensors should work the same way, without the ibus part.
front pdc would ben cool, but not sure if I want to cut in the mouldings. Some hidden reed-contact sensors would be nice, but no idea how good these will work through the plastic.
And the trick would be connecting these to the BMW module.

It looks like all you need to do is + and - to the front gong, and a - (ground) to the switch and the should be it.

Didn't you read EWBR's reply? It needs an ibus comment to wake up.

Hi Folkert,
sure - i read his comment, but bomj3 as well as dancerst are not using ibus (respectively / mentioned to this thread) to get e38 pdc system working in their e36 ?
ok - i see is it not easy to get the e38 pdc system wake up by putting reverse gear in but over switch?

The PDC can be operated without an iBus present, as shown in the E36 video. It has no iBus dependency. It only needs power/GND, sensors, sounder (s), reverse signal, and the dash PDC switch.

Don't they use the pre-ibus module?
I read about shorting some pin inside the module, but didn't read too much into it.
ps since the CD43 supports ibus messages, I wonder if it would display sensor info as mentioned. Wiring in the ibus wire is easy. I have a comb connector in mine to hook up extra wires to the ibus 'network'.

The PDC control unit has a black 12 pin connector on X300 Pin 10 you should provide a toggle signal to ground and the unit will switch the PDC on/off.
The Pin 7 is the path were the LED is driven with voltage to light it up. Normally the gear lever position is send from the TCU to the cluster via a serial data link on older models (before 05/97) and via CANBUS on later models (after 05/97). The cluster is working as a Gateway or easier said as a translater to the IBUS. This signal is provided to the PDC unit to X300 Pin 4. How the cluster is working is stored in the coding data of the cluster.
Find attached some PDFs for a better explanation, hope this helps.

Good evening,
I have a problem with my retrofitted PDC from an E36. It's the retrofit unit (violet connector). Normally this unit is connected only to the blue/yellow cables from the reverse lights, the brown ones for ground, the 2 wires for the speaker and the cables for the sensors. So the whole unit is powered through the reverse lights (Pin 6 and 26 from X300).
Well, I decided to change the pinout of X300 from the retrofit pinout to match the pinout of the factory mounted PDC, so that I'm able to diagnose the unit.
So I connected only Pin 6 to the reverse lights, Pin 26 to fuse 24 which is also used by the overroll sensor, the diagnostic TX (Pin 10) and diagnostic RX (Pin 23) I have soldered to Pin 4 and Pin 16 of the convertible softtop control module, Pin 18 and Pin 14 is connected to ground of the rear lights and last but not least Pin 21 to the Gong T4 input.
Everything works fine. I can diagnose the unit and it also doing it's job as PDC control unit if I go to reverse gear and drive near objects. But...if the system was activated one time, it never switch off when I take out the reverse gear. I have to switch of the ignition to deactivate the system. Then again, if i switch to reverse gear, it recognizes it and activates. But again, if I take out the reverse gear it still keeps activated.
I also can see this on the diagnostic screen in INPA. It recognize, that the reverse gear is taken out, but still keeps active.
Did I have made a misstake in wiring or where else is the problem.
I really hope you can help me.
All the best from Germany
Thomas
P.S: Sorry for my bad english. I hope it is clear what I try to tell you
Today I retrofit original PDC to my 1992 E34 and it work perfect~
Thank you very much~
I use
E32 PDC switch
+E34 rear PDC sensor with E34 wiring
+E38 front PDC sensor with E38 wiring
+E38 PDC control unit
