Post BMW 4-Cylinder Engines Return to US in 2011 in the Z4 sDrive28i

Following the announcement in February of the return of a 4-cylinder engine to the US BMW line-up, BMW today announced that the new 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-Cylinder will first power the Z4 sDrive28i that will arrive in BMW Centers this fall.

I just wish BMW would name the car correctly...I have been wondering since 1999 when they called the remaining E36 and new E46, 323i, when it WAS a 2.5 liter. Why not just call it a Z4 s drive20i?

Nothing wrong with a turbo 4. Now it's time to get chassis weights down.

The maximum output of 240 horsepower is achieved at 5,000 rpm, 1,500 rpm lower than in the normally-aspirated 3.0-liter inline six. The peak torque of 260 lb-ft, comes on stream at just 1,250 rpm. Not only is that 30% more torque than the aforementioned inline-6, it also peaks 1,500 rpm earlier. The vigorous power comes on early and climbs steadily all the way to redline.
Sounds like a winner to me. I bet you 300hp is going to be in sight with a downpipe, intake and tune.

Post BMW 4-Cylinder Engines Return to US in 2011 in the Z4 sDrive28i

Woodcliff Lake, NJ Embargo: April 18, 2011 1:00PM EDT Following the announcement in February of the return of a 4-cylinder engine to the US BMW line-up, BMW today announced that the new 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-Cylinder will first power the Z4 sDrive28i that will arrive in BMW Centers this fall. Like the companys latest TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter turbo inline-6, the new 2.0-liter engine will combine highpressure direct-injection and BMWs VALVETRONIC intake control (hence the name: TwinPower) with a forced induction system consisting of a single twin-scroll turbocharger. With 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, it offers more power and torque than BMWs normally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-6 that it replaces in the Z4 sDrive30i.

i just hope the engine doesnt have the problems that plagued the x35i's.

I agree with Tj tho, they should call it a sDrive20i... or a tDrive20i... or just something with 20i

"The cooling effect of the injected fuel also allows for a higher compression ratio than might otherwise be possible. This results in further efficiency improvements. In the Z4 sDrive28i, we expect a fuel efficiency gain of approximately 20% over the naturally aspirated engine it replaces when combined with the 8 speed automatic transmission."

I really hope it comes in a Manual version, I'm almost certain that they will but I hope they do. I'm gonna go pray now. I can't wait till they start production for this I'll definitely be buying one. Of course a couple months later so they can fix any bugs it might have.

So, will it replace the NA six cylinder in the Z range, or slot in underneath it?

    A theoretically sub 45k Z with a Turbo 4 would be sweet..

The 8-speed is a DCT and will be the only trans. I dont know this for a fact, but I can guarantee it.

The eight speed is not a DCT, it is the same ZF eight speed auto used elsewhere in BMWs range.

A manual will be available as well.

I assume this will also go in the 1 series. Should be a lot of fun with full turbo back exhaust, intake, bigger intercooler, meth and a.....Juicebox!

The 4 cylinder 2.0 TwinPower Turbo is already available on the X1 in Canada.

Have driven about 4 or 5 X1s with this engine in the last month at our dealership, they are just flying out the door. About 7 were through for PDI on Saturday alone. The thing has tons of potential, definitely as quick as the outgoing N52k 6-cylinder. Throw the hood open on an X1 and it looks like an updated rendition of the old E36 318i. About a foot between the radiator an the face of the engine. An exhaust upgrade will do it some favors, current exhaust note is a bit underwhelming.

Am I the only one thinking this is a great base for a high rev, high boost M engine in tribute to BMWs formula1 days in the late 80s?

Waiting for the price, and weight. Looks really cool, excited to get behind the wheel of one.
