I read through quite a number of threads suggesting the F78 fuse should be in the E-Box. They say it's not listed but there.
My car is a 740iL, 03/98 build date. In my E-Box I can see 48 fuse slots all lined up nice and neat, but no 78. I thought it must be around the edges somewhere, but I can't find it. Am I blind or do I need to dig deeper into the E-Box?
Bentley says I have one, but doesn't say where it is.
I'm also looking for the electrical plug for the aux fan so I can juice it directly to see if it will run. It turns freely, but does not come on when the AC is switched on. The threads I found suggest it could be the F78 fuse, (or the 20, 34 or 38 fuses, all good), resistor pack or the fan itself.
If anyone can tell me where the F78 fuse is located the aux fan plug, it would be big help. Thanks.
Fuse 78 will not be in the same fuse box as the obvious 48 numbered fuses (fuse #1-#48) or the trunk (fuses #49-#77)...it will be in the large E-box where the DME and other major control modules reside. So dig deeper into the E-box.
Your 98 has the M62 engine...so your aux fan operation is not as complicated as the later M62TU engines in the 99-01 E38. You have a simple relay up front next to the aux fan that usually fails...and there should be some previous DIYs on sites like e38.org to help with getting the aux fan for your engine to work.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm new to BMW's, so I really appreciate a helping hand. I'll post what I find when I find it.
If you click the following link...you can see (in the second pic for the M62 engine) that there are fuses to the left of some relays that are UNDER the larger E-box lid (once you remove the 4 screws that secure the lid): http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/00/13/34

I removed the cover of the E-Box and found 2 40a fuses. Both were good so the next step is to juice the aux fan directly with +12v to see if it spins up.
Is there any where I can get to the wires without removing the front bumper cover? Same on the relay. Can I get to it without removing the front bumper cover?
Thanks.
Slide your hand between the aux shroud and bumper....the connector is down there, towards the passenger side. The aux fan can be unplugged without being removed from the car. Hope this helps

Hi,
Just for the record, on RHD cars Fuse 78 can be in different places:
1. Right side engine bay near the brake fluid
2. Behind the drivers side 'glove box' - it needs to be removed to find it lurking behind a steel strut.
Mine is in location (2) on my 750i build date Jul-2000.
In a post in the UK seven series register site, someone with a 99 728i also found it in location (2).
Cheers
Ted
PS Location 1 might be pre-face lift.
Good to know as the WDS shows it to be near the brake fluid on pre and post facelift RHD models.
Hi,
Yes very confusing, in my 2000 there are no relays in that location as shown on that photo.
I have fuses in the:
trunk/boot behind the batteries
Passenger side glove box
Drivers side glove box
#78 behind the drivers side glove box.
So the drivers side glove box comes out with two philips head screws on the top inside front of the box - a little tricky to get at with the screw driver from the boot (not a lot of space).
You can release the fuse holder by slipping a finger in behind it and depressing the clip that holds it in place towards you - it will then just slide downwards and out.
Cheers
Adrian
