What do you guys think about changing the color of a car?

I mean I have always been against such a thing, unless the car is brown or green or some highly undesirable color.

But with my 6 the original paint isn't a terrible color is the metallic gray/grey, but it's so far gone that I need to go down to bare metal anyway and start over.

I would want to remove everything, save for the engine and recolor if I did. I mean the engine bay is closed off to normal viewing, but of course the door jams and trunk and hood etc.

    What do you think?

I changed over the interior Sandy beige to Pacific Blue, so why not change the color of the exterior?

    Red, Blue? Ferrari Yellow? haha

I already have a black car.

There's always a stigma running around somewhere that changing the color isn't the greatest thing, but as long as you like it, who cares about the rest? It won't affect value much on these cars, anyway, I don't think.

If you are going to the trouble of ripping out the interior and going to bare metal, I think you would appreciate pulling the engine and doing under the hood as well. IMO, there are few things more disappointing than lifting the hood of a car to reveal another color underneath. Just my 0.02.

All cars are money pits, it's just that some people love theirs more than others.

If your paint is that bad, go for it. I'd pull the motor and get a rough coat on the engine bay, but I'm a little crazy...

I'd change the color, or start with one the right color. The color change I would do would literally be night and day... my car is black, I want white.

I say do it if it makes you happy. These cars really are only worth what they mean to you the way the market is. They are in no way blue chip collector cars yet, do what you like.

I'm going through this process right now and it's a ton of work... But if you are going to do it, do everything so that there aren't any clues that it's been done.

Greens and browns can be really nice too!

Haha, yeah my Z3 is green, not my choice, but the car is fantastic so it works out.

I think with my blue interior I would want to do a blue exterior.

I mean Red is clearly a winner, but it would be too much with the blue interior I think.

I think red and blue could look really cool - definitely unique!

Btw, my Z3 was green as well, and I loved it!

And I like the color combo black over blue. It's probably cheaper to find a 6 in the color you want haha.

Haha, I should apologize, when I think of a brown car I think of all the hideous Porsche 928 and 944's that were brown, I haven't seen one that was taken care of, ever.

I agree with Alex, nothing worse than watching someone walk to the cleanest, shiniest, shimmering red car, just to reveal brown door jams when the door opens.

Given your comment about re-doing the interior, I'm assuming your keeping the car for a bit. If you are going to spend the $, I'd pull the engine and interior and do it right once. My .02, I just think you'll be happier with the end result.

For the amount of time and money this would cost, you would be better of selling it and buying a car in the color combo you want.

Haha, I doubt I'd find a blue on blue 5 speed.

I plan on keeping this car indefinitely, I want to go 1 million miles in it.

It's got just over 300K now and with all the time I have put into redoing so many systems on the car, it would be a tragic waste, not to mention I'd have to do all that work again on even the nicest example out there.

Everyone is right, just go to bare metal and strip the car and re do it.

I'm gonna start getting estimates in a couple of months...

I've gotta finish the interior first and replace the tranny.
