Anyone know which will work? Long story short, my local Autozone doesnt carry that one any more (weird, I know) and the Duralast Gold H8-DLG is out of stock. My battery has bitten the dust and I am wondering will any 720A and 1035 CCA battery work? Those are the OEM specs. Also, must it be the exact same size, dimensions in length? Ive seen plenty of batteries that fit the power but are shorter and not Group 49 batteries. Not to mention half the price. Whats the real skinny here?

Mine came from walmart. Not sure if that will help you.
I am not sure the numbers, but I always use interstate, and have never had a problem.
my 2 cents
Have them transfer one from one of there sister stores. It will be there the same day if you ask them early enough. Also they can get one from there hub. The hub normally feeds like 30-50 autozone stores with 3 runs of parts each day. Autozone uses johnson controls batteries which owns optima now and was rated the best by consumer reports.
Is this new Duralast Gold H8-DLG even worth the extra money though? Its $150 where as the EverStart is half the price at $77. I dont care what the label says, I want the best for my money, including warranty. And ive had some issues with Autozone honoring their warranty in the past.

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …
My first DL49 conked out before the 2-year warranty went out and Autozone counter guy said I have to pay pro-rate for a new battery. Good thing I still got the receipt and they replaced it for free.
I would go with Walmart too next time since I've heard good things on their Everstart batteries plus the longer warranty and better price. That's what drove me to Walmart, the fact that it's half the price of the other batteries and has a 3 year replacement warranty (:
I work at Walmart TLE, and just to let you guys know we just got a few new batteries in like the H8. We also got a lot of labels and stuff to modify the shelves to support the new batteries, but we never got a label for the 49 batteries, and after examining the 49 and the H8 they are identical in physical design and CCA. I believe the H8 batteries were made to replace the 49 batteries.
Also do yourself a favor and just buy the battery from Walmart, you will get a 3 year replacement and the battery only costs 80 dollars, which is about half of anywhere else. I would never have my oil changed, or tires changed at Walmart, but battery technology for cars is all the same. Your not teaching anyone a lesson by buying it elsewhere for $150.
Battery technology is not all the same. I only use glass mat (49AGM) batteries in my cars with interior mounted batteries.

Ditto Xeniczone...the battery class size nomenclature has slowly been changing.
The 49 and 95R class size batteries is what is usually recommended for replacement batteries. But the new nomenclature has introduced H8 & H9 battery class size. Sometimes you will see both numbers together 49/H8 & 95/H9...and sometimes either or.
Also, you'll see the prices run from $77 @ Walmart (for the 49/95 H8/H9) to $99 @ Autozone for the 49DL & $150 for the DLG 95R...up to $200+ for a BMW branded battery.
FYI: in some Walmart locations...instead of the 49 & 95 battery class size...I've seen 48 & 94.

locally the best I can get is Optima, so that is what I have in all my cars... so far, the first one I bought has NOT bitten the dust, and its been in there for almost 5 years.

the new optimas are not as good since they've changed manufacturers, mine died in 3 years. But as far as lead batteries go a 3 year battery is a 3 year battery. Does anyone know if deka makes a glass mat that fits our cars now that would be optimal.

My Duralast 49DL has been well worth the $65 paid. Going on 8 years and still running. Despite the cool winter we had this year AND only weekend driving on the car.
If the Walmart is the exact thing with the longer warranty. I might consider that next.
Old thread, I know... looks like these cheap H8 batteries from Walmart aren't all that cheap anymore... $120. Still, given the 3-year full warranty, it's probably a decent deal these days.
.
Those of you thinking about the size "48" battery, better check the CCA. Size 48 is definitely shorter and has less capacity than the case size 49 battery. If you are replacing a "lead-acid" battery with another battery....better check to see if it has the same "voltage/current charge characteristic". The newer battery technologies have a DIFFERENT voltage/charge curve and may not work well...or...even cause an alternator failure at some point. Indeed, those able to buy size 49 from....say...Walmart have reported good results and a good price. In any case, check the battery technology and CCA before buying a replacement. Also...make sure your replacement has a VENTING SYSTEM on top to vent out fumes out of the battery to the "tube" located in your trunk.

Works really well. Believe me or not my car was actually running with the alternator plugged off for a month and car was used every day until I realised it and plugged it back...
By plugged off you mean what? If you had totally disconnected the alternator you wouldn't have been driving even for a week. With a full battery you can drive maybe 1 or 2 hours max. If your saying you removed the connector at voltage regulator sure, I think it's just used to adjusting the voltage. Even without it plugged in, the alternator will keep on charging.
Since the battery nomenclature change that was mentioned near the end of the old posts in 2011...the battery class sizes to look for are either the 49/H8 or 95/H9 batteries. The brand is up to you...the prices are all over the place, and remember that most of them are usually made by one of the big 3 battery mfgs...regardless of the name brand on the label:
- Johnson Controls
- Exide
- East Penn
There are also 2 major types of batteries...the lead-acid & AGM (absorbent glass mat)...and again, regardless of the type...they BOTH still need to be vented. Most of the newer batteries vent from the side like the original BMW battery. There still may be a few 49 class size batteries that vent from the top (these require the extending vent kit)...but most of the new H8 or 95R/H9 batteries vent from the side.
ANY of the 49//H8 or 95R/H9 batteries should have the specs needed for your BMW (see East Penn chart below for example)...but the I6 engined BMWs that are low optioned and are used in a temperate climate that doesn't get too hot or too cold...may be able to suffice with a lower spec 48/H6 or 94R/H7 battery...but my recommendation is to step up to the 49/H8 or 95R/H9.
Note the PERFORMANCE LEVEL specs of the 49/H8 & 95R/H9 versus the smaller 48/H6 & 94R/H7 batteries in the chart below:
- CCA - cold cranking amps @ 0 °F
- RC - reserve capacity (minutes)
- AH - amp hour
- CA - cranking amps @ 32 °F
Below are just some examples of 49/H8/95R/H9 batteries that are out there and an approx range of costs & specs:
49/H8 Lead Acid battery @ Sam's Club
49/H8 AGM battery @ Sam's Club
95/H9 Lead Acid Battery @ Batteries Plus
You don't have to look for a Duracell battery...but do look//ask for the recommended battery class sized mentioned multiple times above. Also consider the warranty & the number of outlets the warranty can be honored at without your original receipt (if you're not a receipt keeper). This would call for the vendor to maintain a database with your info...which I know AutoZone does...which is another reason many BMW owners have bought the 49 DL in the past...and now the Duralast DLG H8, Duralast Platinum (AGM) H8, and the Duralast DLG 95R. Others have chosen the Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, O'Reilly's, NAPA, Interstate, Walmart Everstart Maxx batteries...and other brand names that don't come to mind right now.
