    Engine tick help

My GF's e36 325 with 260K on the clock has developed a tick. The other day before she went to work i had her pop the hood, right away i heard valve clatter and maybe a stuck lifter/rocker. So i said we would change the oil and see if it will clear up.

So i changed the oil with valvoline synth and started her up. The car not the GF . Since it was in the garage i took some time to check out this tick.

Its coming from either the most forward cylinder (#1) ,or i fear, from the timing chain area ( i cant think of the proper word as i am still recovering from st. paddy's day weekend).
The sound is not so much of a I6 clatter/tick, its almost like a slap noise. If it just a stuck lifter or a bent valve i can take care of it myself, but ive never done anything with a timing chain except look at it.

I can prolly get a video posted tomorrow.

Thoughts..... concerns... comments are all appreciated.

what year? if its a vanos car those are known to make a little noise and there are kits to remedy that..but that depends on the year

The VANOS noise is more of rattle than a tick. Identify your noise here:

If it's lifter tick you might try a slightly heavier weight oil as a stopgap. I went from 5W-30 to 0W-40 and my lifter tick only appears when I've been idling for a while and the oil pressure has had a chance to drop sufficiently. Before, it would tick every single time the engine was idling while warm.

    Yeah, deff not the vanos.
It really has the rhythm of lifter tick, but its a bit louder and more of a slap.
Im really concerned with how far forward it is. if it was in the middle of the valve cover i would say, no big..... change oil, keep an ear out, but it really wont hurt too much to leave it till ive gotta go into there for something else.

But since its so far forward, i cant say 100% that its lifter tick.
