Auto mode in climate control doesn't work

    Hi .

My climate control doesn't work anymore when it's in auto mode . Everything works in manual mode but not in auto . I noticed that when I am in auto and am setting the drivers side temperature the fan speed will adjust itself but nothing happens when I set the passenger temp ,the fan will stay at the speed it was before . When I am driving the fan will stay at the default 3rd setting all the time unless I re-adjust it . All fan speeds work too .

When I am driving especially with cold car I can hear the actuator-electric motor engaging (I think the sound comes from the dashboard ) like it would try to adjust the settings but nothing happens . I didn't hear this sound when the climate control worked as it should though .

Also speaking of climate controls is it necessary to take apart the head unit and clean the dust out so the little fan inside will move freely ? Did you guys do that ? I am thinking of doing that for a looong time now but I am not that excited about it bcs I don't want to break brittle plastic parts .

    Any ideas ? Thanks .

No the temp gauge works as it should . Also the coolant temperature gauge and the digital (when I run a "service menu") cluster works

    Likely a bad IHKA control.

Seems like it to me too. Would you maybe know if I can replace the head unit with one from newer e39 one like 2003 with max button ? My car is 1997 and has a rest button one and if I am going to buy new unit I would prefer newer one so it will hopefully last longer .

No, it may be more prudent to get one of the same vintage as yours, in case there were some changes in the firmware.

I need to change it as well, because my temp sensor is bad. Tried to clean it. I have same one with REST button, but will go for MAX.
I have few people who changed it and MAX works out of the box, no need to recode or w/e. So I will try to change it as well.

And it's easy to take IHKA apart.
