    e36 Drift truck s38 powered

Welcome to my dream build. I don't have money to fund my dreams at the hands of a professional, so with a vision, willingness to learn to overcome whatever may stay in the way, and me little garage, I've been notchin away

Here she is now a rollin

    a little sliding

She started as a 100k 93 e36 shell for a couple hundred bucks. My plans are to give her a full track treatment and throw in all my m3 guts into her for an ultimate sliding maching.
Poor ol salvaged contorted shell m3…..

oh wait, really poor m3 shell

    her hitting the wall

    and the newby

    and the teardown began

So all the while I”ve had the idea of truck plaguing my mind…..
I’ve seen e30’s, e39, 240’s, and subies chopped to trucks. I’ve always liked the idea if the lines allowed, so after a little tinkering my mind was set……

    motivation……

Having not seen any e36 trucks made before and knowing it could look sweet with ghetto photoshop renditions, Out came the angle grinder and badabing, truck is under way.

sawzal and plasma cutters are over rated angle grider ftw …..
initially my plans were to go crazy with my roll cage to make up for the noodle rear end I’ve created, as this is a full purpose built slider. She just happens to look like a truck….

then after a bit more searching I found this and decided to go this route for the bed cage. Much easier to get the bodylines I wanted, and I figured I could get good support in the rear this way. Not to mention keeping the weight as even as possible as I would hate to mess up the way the e36 handles.

This is where I mention at this point I hadn’t welded before other than learning on a couple pieces of tubing with a borrowed welder…..no better way to learn than by necessity eh?

so got the bed frame and the rear body lines underway,

onto the cab makin. And idea came to make the rear of the roof flat, so why not mock it up.

    and flat roof

b pillar and rear frame mockup…..

just freestylin and kinda went with it all up til this point. Usually the mock ups have to be changed etc, it all looked good enough to go with it.

Nearly done with the bed before fiberglass

gutted the sunroof for the roof….

then for the hitch…..The trunk’ll work nicely

    And why not, more teardown….

    wires of fun

And a bit more ghetto photoshop fun

and incomes the roll cage tubing. Big thanks to Vitaly Spokan for bending it all for me

After thinking of the fiberglass bed for so long, I decided to just sheet metal it all in and make it permanent.
(after having welded a bunch starting with flux then finally getting a bottle n a bit of comfort, 26g sheet metal was another task)

to tie the cage in fully

And finally, we have a bed

    And a working tailgate…

S38b35 w/ Metric Mechainc intake cam, Fresh head rebuild, Trans, Megasquirt II fully built but needing to be wired up

    got crazy with a wirewheel

Also got a fuel cell with the motor, but I like the stock tank location

And onto how this front sump’d motor is going into this car

Of course a custom rear sump oil pan would be ideal, but I don’t have the $ or tools to do so, so maybe e34 pan, but no go.

what if you moved the steering rack rearward to clear the sump?

barely worked with the stock arms, but not with the e46 that I’ll be using

    a little added enforcement

    some more cage workin

then found a way to get a bit more clearance out of the oil pan to move the rack farther forward
Thanks to Evil Engineering for the alum moddin I have yet to undertake

and since I’ve gone passed the point of no return into racecardom, some more gutting and wirewheeling

    More with the cage

the sunroof warped a bit when welded, so I replaced it with a piece of new sheetmetal which warped elsewhere, but is finally ok after some series massaging

Fully stripped, seamwelded, and por15d…..nearly ready to be rolling again

    bed welding for days

and nearing the finalization of all the monkey bars

Time for suspension to go back on

    Bushings first

car’s worth hardware n a bit more ready to go back on

    rear end on

and she’s got wheels on again

what s going on with the door bars? there are a bunch of load paths that just end making for a VERY weak design throughout.

crazy build. i really dig how the trunk is turned into a functional tailgate.

the rest of the cage looks spot on, but i have to agree the door bars look pretty haphazard. great work from a first timer overall though

k since the cage is @#$%, or moreso just door bars, constructive criticism rather than @#$% eh?

would a simple x door bar be stronger?
or persay if I were to remove the bar coming from the dash bar and replace it with a bar connecting it to the rearward union of the ending diagnal bar? thus making it a fully connnected x with a parallel bar running longitudinally?
