Popular topics concerning drifting and car modification.

This thread is intended to put together all of the important topics concerning drifting so that we can have a more focused section and not have a bunch of repeat question asking. Topics should include: steering angle, LSD talk, hydro and stock Ebrakes. If I missed anything please feel free to add, and hopefully we can get a mod to help bring some structure with stickys to this section.

    Good idea!
One of the steering mod threads is for an e34?
What's the next step for steering mods beyond rack spacers?

I'd be interested to know what tire pressure you guys are running. I know chelsea's running very low tire pressure in the back but his e36 has more power than a lot of us...

36 front usually and 36-40 rear. But this is a VERY VERY subjective thing for each driver. I just set it for good steering fell in front and even tire wear in back with good grip.

as close to 0 camber as possible on the z(e)30 rear end. it sure cambers in fast under load

also a hint of toe out, but thats all personal preference.

i run 22psi in the rear tires.. they are less likely to chunk .. that way when you are drifting it will heat up a bit.

thanks Dom. I was talking mainly about toe, the eccentrics will only pull 1.25* camber out, hopefully the AKG subframe spacers can bring it back to near zero.. they did help noticeably with tire wear.

i was thinking a bit of toe out too.. stability in way far out transitions is what i'm looking for.

also.. in the m44 equipped runs i was using about 40psi in the rear tires, now with the m50 i've dropped to 35psi cold pressure. they heat up quick and at lower pressure they last longer.

So does anyone want to cover or share there experience in suspension tuning?
Im just curious to what adding caster, moving steering racks, etc. I've noticed differences in sliding from car to car but something specific has to help with transitioning and overall feel. When I'm sliding my e36 I find myself fumbling with with steering wheel and constantly helping the car steer, where as when I'm driving a Nissan s14 I'm almost letting the car drive itself and only catching/ releasing the steering wheel. Anyone have any tips on how you've got your e36 chassis to basically "float"

Caster and ackerman are the primary contributers to self steer. Generally the more Caster you have the more self steer the have. Stock E36 alignment is lacking in caster. A good set of camber caster plates and offset FCAB's can make a world of difference. You should be aiming for more than +6* of caster in my experience.

+1. whoshaunq it looks like you might have e46 arms on your car (judging by how much front camber you have)

e46 arms, aside from the other reasons why they're bad, reduce your caster by quite a bit - when i installed them in my e30, with stock offset CABs the steering wouldn't really return to center.

regardless of what kind of arms you have, get a pair of offset CABs like piner mentioned and you'll have a much better time in your car
