And when you walked around your vehicle to see if one of the corners was lower than the other, and checked each tire to see what the inflation pressure was...what did you find?

    • did you find the corner with the sagging suspension and it was located _ _ _ _
    • I didn't find any sagging suspension....
    • did you find the tire that was low on air pressure and it was located _ _ _ _ and then you went and filled it up with _ _ _ _ to match the other tires
    • all of my tires have the correct air pressure...so I reinitialized the tire pressure warning light...then the light went _ _ _ . Or did it remain _ _?

    BMW X5 2001
    Hello there,
I'm new to this forum and have a question regarding the self leveling suspension of my 2001 X5. I bought the car last spring, which was serviced by BMW dealers from day one, and just recently have noticed that once I've parked for the night ( outside ) by morning the suspension has lowered almost completely down. As soon as I open a door I hear the air pump and it kicks in and raises, but until this week I haven't seen such a drastic difference. It has finally gotten cold at night here, frost in the yard in the morning, so perhaps that is why? Just trying to make sure it's normal in cold weather since I bought the car after last winter. Thanks in advance!

Alex, I currently have the same problem on the same X5, I was wondering how you went about fixing or even figuring out the problem. I'm about to change my control arms also. I don't wanna start changing stuff that doesn't need to be changed & spending crazy money. Or can anyone assist with this issue. Thanks in advance.

I found out what the issue was (blown air sturt), I ordered two from Arnott.com ($469.00, but a $100.00 returned for the old core). Also if you get it scanned or buy a Autel MaxiDas 708 ($$$$) that can help figure out the issue, but it won't tell you if the strut has a hole, it is a great product & purchased it. Install is easy & trust me, I'm no auto mechanic (my mechanic wanted $300 for labor; $150 each side), I had help (get help if you can, gives you pieace of mind).

745 raised rear suspension, air shocks filled to max, self level inactive - this issue exist with all cars that have electric controlled air suspension. Thanks for this post, I have the same issue, but not sure if I can just swap the new part which I am getting on ebay with the broken one or do I have to program it?

my 2002 x5 also has the dash "self levelling susp. inactive" warning showing. i checked the car and it seems slightly lower by about 3/4 of an inch on 1 side. it may have been like this before i checked-but i dont know. the car is staying up on the suspension at the moment but obviously something is not right, is there anything i can check-look for like fuses etc, myself without getting into diagnostics ( not computer literate). any help would be greatly appreciated guys. eastfields

    hey guys,

My 2005 x5 4.4i started doing the same around 4 weeks ago. I've finally had enough of the rear sitting like its dropped on its ass and the front reaching for the sky. So i'm going to buy this unit from ebay and see how we go. I'll report back, fingers crossed it works. Already have an oil leak, cant afford to fix both professionally!

Looking to buy a used 2001 BMW X5. It is in good shape but the self level inact message is on. Should I worry or not and is it an easy fix to do myself. I am very mechanically inclined, I do all my own work.

    Hello All,
I had the same problem with my 2003 X5, then I realised the Right Hand Side of the car was lower than the left after parking for 3 or more hours. On opening the car, it would level up the height.
In my case I replaced the pneumatic spring, part number 37121095580 and the error cleared.

    Regards

    Olowo

I have an 04 and got the same error when it was sub zero temps here in IL. I waited till warmer weather then cleared the message and it's not come back yet. If you need a new bag they aren't that expensive.

Any updates on this. Mine started doing it after I put the car on the lift. I checked everything but didn't get a chance to get under the car to check the sensor.

Seems to be common problem, so is there a way to diagnose problem without replacing everything. I don't see any difference in ride height, nor do I see any difference when letting vehicle sit for couple days, so no air bag leaks as I can tell. Someone said fuse is in glove and back panel, as in two, so is this something that can cause this error.

I'm new to the forum. Does anyone know of a mechanic I can go to in the Oakland/East Bay Area of CA? I am the second owner of a 2001 X5 4.4 and I am experiencing the self level sus inact flashing lights. I took it to a local mechanic that was close to home and he couldn't figure out what was wrong. They diagnosed it and determined the fuses were fine. The light is still on and I am not sure what to do. Do I continue to drive it? I'm not feeling very secure about it since the light is on and flashing between two red arrows. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Hi guys!I am new here, sorry about my english.
My car only have 21k miles, but it is armoured, maybe that is why I am having this problems earlier.
I am having the Self Levelling Inactive also. The suspension is all down.
I took it to a shop and they said it was the air compressor pump so I changed the air compressor by myself, but the air springs doesn't inflate.

I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes to reset the system, then connected the battery and turn on the car and turned the steering wheel all to the right and also to the left, I saw in some forum that it could reset also like this.
The suspension 3 level switch is blank, doesn't light green. The air compressor doesn't starts, sometimes it starts for about 5 seconds.
I have already checked the fuses and relays.

Do I need to program the system just for changing the air compressor pump?
Also sometimes I got the 4x4 yellow sign on the dash but other times it disappears.

What is the best cost benefit scanner for this car? Can I erase Errors, and also reprogram the system with it? I would like to do it on my own...

    Thanks

You have to remove your spare tire and it is located inside the dome like thing that sits on top of your battery.

Hi, I have a question... I've just purchased a very clean x5 4.4 almost a week ago. The self leveling suspension inactive indicator came on and the front passenger side airbag isn't inflating. After inspection there is no leak. I checked the fuse box inside, the back on the right and I noticed something odd. There us supposed to be a 7.5amp and a 30amp fuse (79&87) that power the suspension BUT where the 30amp fuse is, there is a 20 amp fuse there instead. I'm wondering would replacing this 20amp fuse with the correct 30amp do the trick? Could this be the cause of my issue?

    Hi there,
Am considering buying an X5 for the first time and currently have two candidates in mind, both of which are '04 4.8iS.
One (Titansilber) has relatively high mileage (120k miles) but full BMW Service History. No real issues other than aircon not blowing cold and rear tyres worn to limits ($$$$$).
The second car has lower mileage (100k miles) and nicer colour (Le Mans) but the current owner (last two years) has used a specialist workshop and done 'some of the work' himself. I haven't seen the car yet, but among several 'minor' issues, owner says the suspension warning light is on, so I did some searching and found this thread. Recent suspension related work was replacement of the entire right front suspension strut assy due to damage from hitting a kerb(!), and four new Toyo tyres were just fitted.
Could either or both of these actions have resulted in the suspension message appearing, and would it be a case of just resetting the system to cancel the message? Cheers.

    Something similar with my E70

Yesterday, my family came home and my son suggested that my E70 X5 was sitting very low in the back. My wife asked me what was in my car that was weighing it down so much. I went out to check and the rear of the car was sitting very low. I drove around the neighborhood and there was an error message that said something like "System leveling Malfunction!" Something like that. The icon is an image of a car with an arrow at the bottom.

I went out to see the error again about 20 minutes ago, but forgot what the error was. I just went out again, but this time, I put the key in the car, drove it around the neighborhood, and the warning lamp did not come on (a car with arrows at the bottom), nor did the error message come up on display. I also manually went into the system to see all control messages - nothing. All systems checked out OK.

I get back home, get out of the car, look at the rear, and its NORMAL (not sitting low at all). h

This sounds like a fuse or something, are a resetting of a code .... or something. Any suggestions out there?

I know this is an old thread but in case somebody stumbles upon it... The module for the x5 4.4 and my new 4.6 are both located under a plastic shield surrounding the battery. Take out the spare, the compressor, then the plastic cover. On both of my 5's there was water build up in the area that damaged some wiring and the module. I went to a local yard that has foreign cars...Guess what. Every x5 there had all of them in tact. I bought 5 modules for $20.cash. I said they were relays.. All 5 work... It was a 5 minute job. The biggest issue if you're planning on purchasing an X5 (E53) is the status of the timing chain guides. It's a 2,500 to 3k job that will need to be done at some point.. imho.. my Best, Dutch.

Hi All, I have a 2007 X5 with a 3rd row seat. I removed the seat looking for the dome in the back but it's no where to be found. Can someone tell me where it is for this year model? I found videos on YouTube about taking the back floor out and it's under it, but that is not the case for this model. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
