Overhead oil light
Fishing for opinions all, just finished my timing belt/water pump, hooked the battery back up, and took it for a test drive. Runs great, no leaks, but now my oil light came on, on the overhead display, not the dash, haven't gotten too deep into it yet, am going to give it a look after work today. Was just wondering if anyone may know somethingI'm missing, maybe a reset or fuse that blows or something. Hoping to find something simple.
Thanks all, Matt

That is connected to the oil level sensor which is mounted in the oil pan on the left side. Either your oil level is actually low, the sensor is not hooked up or it's gummed up inside and not responding to changes in oil level quickly enough to turn the light off.

Hey strad, thanks, when I went out to start my car before work, the light was off, it appears to have reset itself, but since you brought up my oil level sensor, I will say that when I did my subframe, clutch, and oilpan gasket, I noticed how cracked and frail the wire was that went to the sensor. I don't know if thats starting to glitch on me, but that wire has been a concern since I finished that job, so I now know that it may become an issue. Thanks, Matt

Strange to see this post, because last night, my overhead light came on as well. I pulled into the closest gas station, and checked the oil. It was completely full, though due for a change. I chalked it up as a reminder to change the oil.
When I started it back up, the light didn't come back on, and was fine again this morning. Maybe that wire is suspect in mine too. Thanks for mentioning it.
Could dirty oil cause that sensor to come on? Was your oil change long enough ago that this could be your issue too? Thanks...

That light is not an oil change due light. However, in the sense that dirty oil can gum up the float in the sensor, dirty oil can cause the light to turn on. The sensor can be cleaned if you determine the cause to be a gummed sensor.

My car will do the same thing sometimes. It usually happens when I park on a steep slope though it sometimes happens on flat ground. Nothing to worry about, just a sticky sensor.

Thanks for the input guys, nope mine isn't due, changed it about 1k ago, checked it, its at a good level, so either a glitch or because I had the front end jacked up to do my timing belt. I know it isn't gummed from changing my oil pan gasket ( washed the pan out), bet it was from being jacked up, I test started it while it was still on stands in the front, that probably triggered it.
