AS far as I know my RSMs are fine, but I want to upgrade them as long as I'm doing the rear shocks.
I've heard of people using E46 RSMs and (What) reinforcement plates? (What's the OE recipie and cost?)
IS it OK to go with BMW parts or is aftermarket essential? I'm hesitant to spend $100 for RSMs unless there is some clear advantage.

It depends on what you want from your car. if you rarely track it, and have a stock suspension, then the E46 mounts and Z3 backing plates are absolutly fine. Everything, mounts, plates, new nuts and gaskets was about $58 for the whole deal with the CCA discount.
No matter where you go, there you are...
Depends on which rear shock you are installing.
If you are getting Bilsteins, than go with JTD or Ground Control and don't waste your time with any of the E36/E46 shockmounts..... trust me, as I have a bag of damaged shock mounts to prove otherwise.
It is the "Z3" reinforcement plates, and they are worth every penny.
