    Columbus's Day

Another pivotal moment in history, Catalonia, Spain(?)...

...where it was Chris who actually started this long tradition of finger pointing.

    **** The Real Story ****
For the US federal holiday known as Columbus Day, Monday Oct 9 this year, I 'needed' to collect the Barcelona half of the dueling Columbus' that point to each other from across the Atlantic, the other side having first been collected in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Since rain was forecast for Monday, I decided to move the shoot to the day before, Sunday Oct 8.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the memo that Place de Catalonya at mid La Rambla would be ground zero for a counter-protest by the nationalists (shown above draped in Spanish national flags) against the regional separatists who's Catalonia flags are draped from balconies around town.

I popped up out of the metro and unexpectedly found myself in the center of a crowd estimated to be either 350K or 950K, depending on who's counting, the regional police or the nationalists.

    *******
Fun fact: Columbus relics are (maybe) buried half in the building behind 'him' in Santo Domingo, the other half in Seville where I will next check in on him.

    That reminds me.
The other day I got stuck in one of those underwater parties.

Didn't know if I fit in.

Instead I wandered over and got a "giant" clam to pose with a pivot I just happen to bring along.
Giant? This one was actually, maybe 24 inches across.

Inventory was getting low on quarter-inch square section AND my van has been down for a while. So...
I now have the answer to everyone's question.

With the trunk closed, the ski bag unzipped, you ('93+) can carry 9-1/2 feet.
Just a slightly less than my (mini) van.

Hello all, hope Hyper is still making handles. I am finally the proud owner of a 1995 840ci 6 speed with 155k on the clock.

You have a V8 6-spd and your first BF post goes to the pivot thread?

unfortunately yes, I had to start somewhere, forgive me... Please have mercy...lol, I have a 2000 750iL V12 lots of fun with its issues and challenges and now I have this 840ci with 6 speed conversion already done. But now I need to sort through it all and make sure its all tight and reliable. ANd the first thing that got me was the drivers door stopped opening via outside handle.

By intro'ing yourself on your own "New with V8 6-spd" thread, the community can give you the proper high fives, welcome to the club, provide tips on how to square the circle and then think outside the box.
On this thread, you'll just get lumped in with all the other door handle victims.
Here, per protocol, no one can say much without being OT.
Go for it, start that thread!

Sincerest thanks to Hyper… his quality solution turned a depressing mess into a satisfying, almost enjoyable repair. The door handle is (literally) better than new!

    Last call

After a 5 years of production, a final fabrication run is planned for mid Jan 2019.
This fix is now installed into around 1% of all e31's, but demand has turned spotty, and I have another, million-dollar project that will have me buried starting like right now.
    Will squeeze this in anyway.

Fyi, at least one handle will show up at a SoCal wrench event in Feb, hosted by EFI. Might be convenient.

    Update

Raw materials arrive tomorrow Jan 10 2019.
Interest has been strong and prompts a larger than usual run, typically 10 now planned for 30.
Everyone, please recall that quotes and admin is ultimately via email, not PM.
If you post here AND I know your email from previous biz, then I'll contact you when I'm ready.
Payable invoices go out next week, after finished goods exist...once again after a 4 month sabbatical.

    **** Competing projects ****
Was in Lisbon over the holidays

and fyi was able to stuff a 22" CAD monitor into my North Face and, with a plywood shield, it survived checking at SFO MIA LHR LIS and pretty damm MAD.

Good decision, the CAD desk came in handy when ambushed by the M60->M62 cam sensing thread.
Using the system from my kitchen table in Lisbon, was able to layout and launch to the Sunstone fab house in Oregon, an electronic solution coded name CSC.
    More, soon.

Now back in NorCal and the CSC boards, both the rev A throw-away and rev B keeper, arrive Saturday along with components to be loaded.
Software should be in good shape for an initial look-see.

    ********
I overindulged in the Lisbon bars and inadvertently closed on the SoCal house, the aforementioned million-dollar project.
This too competes with door handles for the reason that I am both the architect and builder on my NorCal "scorched-earth" project,

and I am now compelled to complete a few details involving trim and hydronics.
    Hopefully this nets one-point-five.
Would like to think it's my brilliant design and attention to details, but its rather just a savy location.

Down in SoCal, I have to re-learn AutoCAD skills for the SoCal "make-over".
Kitchen, baths, bump-out etc, with associated electrical plumbing and framing.

And will have to restore my general contractors license to...
    1) get a break on materials cost and
    2) gain access to some wholesale facilities that are trades-only.

Clearly there is never a dull moment in Hyper World. Good luck with the "scorched earth project", but it is my impression that you don't leave much to luck.
